Reception bday parties, please help me shortlist a few gifts?!

Homeiswherethedogsare · 13/03/2026 11:52

We have recently attended our first couple of reception bday parties for the whole class and I am quite shocked that we have 8 more coming in the next 7 weeks!
I am still new to the school parties game so would appreciate your help. These are a few gifts I have shortlisted (it's a mix of boys and girls that we are buying for). Logic is that I would like to get things that don't occupy too much space, no plastic toys, no board games that will end in a charity shop, anyone can enjoy and use or regift etc. How would the options below be received:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plus-Plus-Building-Blocks-300-Piece-Multi-Colour/dp/B007SNMH62?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 (in several colors, for boys and girls)

Does it feel aligned with what people usually gift/receive? I honestly have no clue!

I’d rather a Squishmallow than more plastic little bits

Oh yes me too!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2026 16:35

£10 Amazon voucher or Roblox voucher is always well received

fiorentina · 13/03/2026 16:53

Dobble or UNO. Or we have a lovely sweet shop that sells nice ice cream too and gave a voucher for there.

BeOchreDog · 13/03/2026 17:17

I just keep a stock of presents when I see good clearance offers, normally at Sainsbury’s! They had a load of Lego sets for 80% off last week so I got a selection of Disney and car sets for £6 each. They also had big playdoh kits reduced to a few pounds from £20 for my preschool child’s friends. The travel sets of magnatiles go down well and are sometimes reduced to less that £10 on Amazon. The national trust nature explorer kits have also been well received.

Floofle · 13/03/2026 17:45

My go to is pyjamas! I just ask the parents what size they are and what they like and then get eg superhero size 5-6 PJs. Easy peasy

HelenaWilson · 13/03/2026 17:54

The Works - lots of art and craft or stationery ideas for under a tenner.

Tootiredforthis23 · 13/03/2026 18:05

I just do one of the nick jr playdoh sets from entertainer, the £9 ones. They have ones of different themes like ice cream, unicorns etc. They’re pretty decent sets and I don’t know a child that doesn’t like playdoh.

I often did pyjamas with a gift receipt

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/03/2026 18:22

Money
book vouchers
smiggle stationery - I look in sales and stash bits and bobs

Ahwig · 13/03/2026 18:35

The works is your friend here. It’s perfect for these type of gifts.

FlicaBonnyLittleStar · 13/03/2026 18:40

I don’t think the plain Lego type stuff (sets are popular if age and ability appropriate) , and the secret diary is too old. What would your child like? Not elder siblings though

Don't always ask what they’d like, as I did that, bought the Lego set they liked, and had to exchange it, when a grandparent of the child bought the same, I didn’t mind, but when I gave them a choice of alternatives ( big mistake) they chose the one I hadn’t gone out and bought as I hadn’t heard from them.
I sent the one I’d bought, as that was the second trip and present I’d had to buy.

Gifts are fairly nice and safe in reception, all things are liked at that age by the child. As they get older, money or a game specific card is much appreciated.

GirlMumForever · 13/03/2026 18:45

My go to gifts at the moment (DD is in Y1) are either the Plus Plus puzzle by numbers or Hey Clay kits. Both on offer in the Amazon Spring Deals at the moment so stock up!

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · 13/03/2026 18:52

I think you'd get more for your money in a shop. My 4yo just had a party and the presents seemed a bit more than these and its not a particularly fancy area.

Wiaa · 13/03/2026 18:58

I usually got lego or hot wheels for boys and b and m have a Barbie on a scooter that is £15 and all the girls got that

EatMoreChocolate44 · 13/03/2026 19:01

Voucher for your nearest toy shop (or cash). My kids always end up with unwanted gifts or double or even triple the same thing. They love going to the toy shop to buy something they would really like. It's an easy gift, no waste and everyone is happy.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 13/03/2026 19:12

Argos 2 for £15 Lego

Books the child likes

Wonderingpurple · 13/03/2026 20:04

Anything Crafty is usually a hit, as a parent I’ve been very happy to receive several craft sets that I can tuck away and pull out on a rainy day (Foil fun was my daughter’s best present at age 5, make your own keyring craft sets etc). Stationary sets are great, smiggle often have good stuff in the sales which kids seem to love. I personally avoid gifting books (unless I know a specific thing the child is into) as I absolutely love books and have far too many!

HotMummaSummer · 13/03/2026 20:09

I got most children I know who turned 4 and 5 last year a potions kit! All got good feedback

Mumandcarer80 · 13/03/2026 20:21

You can’t go wrong with some money in a card. I would rather do that as can get something they want.
