Head lice Hedrin 4%

My daughter has head lice. Applied hedrin 4% last night and will wash out this morning as directed. Will apply again in 7 days (as directed). But what do I do in the meantime?? No advice on leaflet! Should I use other products? Keep combing with the nitty comb everyday and use maybe the Hedrin mousse? So confused. First time dealing with head lice - I’ve checked the rest of household (none but we all applied hedrin anyway!) washed her bedding. Anything else I’m forgetting? My daughter has long very curly hair (mixed race) so it took some time to comb through! Any tips much appreciated.

I would nit daily with conditioner.
I have given up on Hedrin. It doesn't work for us. We nit.

When you say “nit daily” what does this mean, comb through with a nit comb daily? Also do you do this on dry hair?

I’d wet comb with the special comb daily.
Just to say, I bought hedrin in a supermarket and was fine but when I bough my second off Amazon it was very weird - I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t used the original but this was runnier and smelled different so I discarded. I don’t know where you bought yours but wanted to share that in case it’s relevant.

When we had nits in our house, we did the nit comb / conditioner method inbetween the hedrin applications. Check the NHS website but I think its every other day rather than every day? We got rid of them after 2.5weeks so it wasnt too bad.

I now do a preventative periodic nit comb and if there is an outbreak at school, I use the vosene anti lice shampoo plus DD either has her hair in french plaits or a bun + hair net every day. Im not sure whether any of the products really work but it makes me feel better!

Hedrin didn’t work for us - go straight to Lyclear.

Amazing thanks!

Conditioner and nitty gritty comb is the way to go. They can be resistant to shampoos.

Musgroove · 07/03/2026 10:29

Thank you everyone!

If anyone cares for an update we washed with conditioner and comb this morning to wash out the Hedrin. Nitty gritty just doesn’t work on her hair (very very tight curls Afro hair). I used the thinnest comb we have which worked just as fine. Dozens came out in the bath.😩We’ll continue this everyday until there’s no more. What fun!
thanks for the tips everyone.

Ah, what a nightmare OP. Hope you get rid soon! I didnt trust DH to check my own hair properly so I went for a consultation at one of these places and the lady sucked them off my head with a giant hoover! https://hairforceclinics.com/ Worth considering if you have one near you as it was really quick (if pricey).

What??? This is actually a thing?! What clinic did you go to? Please pm me if you would rather not say publicly. Seriously considering this as an option.

I went to the one in Wandsworth as we are based in London and the lady was great. Its a room in her house that she has set up - she uses a light and a magnifying glass to inspect all your head, then uses a really strong suction machine to go through each section of your hair. If she finds any, then you go back for a second visit a week later to make sure shes got them all. I'd already treated all our house with the hedrin and combed out all the nits and eggs so for me she just confirmed they were all gone, which was very reassuring. She doesnt recommend taking very young children though due to how long you have to sit still but I think she said she would do primary upwards (DD was 3y at the time so I just kept doing hers the traditional way at home).

neem oiL is brilliant for getting rid of them. Makes hair too slippy to grip and they slide off hair and it conditions hair. Stinks but works.
