Should I be walking my 11 week old for feeds

My 11 week old was born at 7lb1oz. She’s been a little slower at gaining weight than average and weighs 9lb 13oz at 11 weeks.

Health visitor come yesterday and weighed her and said I need to feed her more but she generally will not feed anymore. She takes 3-4 oz every 2.5-3 hours and when she’s full physically won’t suck the bottle.

She asked how long she was going through the night and when I said she was doing a 6 hour stretch she told me I need to wake her. But she just won’t take it even if I try dream feed.

baby is happy content having wet nappies and I generally think she is just a petite girl (I’m only 5ft so not exactly a giant) would you be waking her at night for feeds?

No I wouldn't. She's gaining weight, sleeping well. 4oz every 3 hours sounds good. Is she happy and.content generally?

notabingthing · 06/03/2026 06:50

She sounds like she’s taking a decent amount of milk anyway ! Don’t wake her up, I wouldn’t anyway ! Not unless you think she would dreamfeed ?

Sorry just saw you mentioned dream feed 🤦‍♀️

No she’s fine. And you definitely don’t need to walk her to feed her 😜

Jrisix · 06/03/2026 06:56

I wouldn't, as long as she's a healthy weight and gaining. Both mine slept 6-7+ hours from the first few weeks without feeds (although they were breastfed, I don't know if that makes any difference) and our paediatrician always said let them sleep even when the first one was gaining slowly. Sleep is also important for their development.

Bitzee · 06/03/2026 06:57

No I wouldn’t. Sounds like she was an average ish birth weight and is now catching down to find the curve she should be on, and makes sense it’s a lower percentile if you’re very petite. It’s pretty normal.

I bet your health visitor doesn’t have DC. My niece has just had her first baby, I cannot believe some of the things she’s been told to do, one being told to feed every hour. When I had my DC I only fed every 4 hours and only when they cried at night. My first was sleeping 6 hours at 6 weeks old, but hardly slept daytime, my second would sleep long periods daytime, but never slept through at night until 9 months old. As long as she’s happy, content and putting on weight, carry on.

Jk987 · 06/03/2026 07:11

No way. Enjoy the 6 hour stretches and get some sleep yourself.

Onetwothreefourgo · 06/03/2026 07:12

Not a chance!

ArcticSkua · 06/03/2026 07:15

I would not wake her to feed. She sounds fine to me.

I sometimes wonder what the training is like for HVs and midwives given the wildly different advice they can give.

At our pre-natal classes we were told to wake a baby every 2 hours to feed until they were 6 months old, a suggestion which was quite rightly laughed out of the room.

APatternGrammar · 06/03/2026 07:25

Obviously keep an eye on her weight but it doesn’t sound like there‘d be any point in waking her if she wouldn’t feed when you do. I‘m sure she’ll get hungrier when she’s ready to grow.

BelleEpoque27 · 06/03/2026 07:27

No, she sounds fine. Obviously keep weighing her regularly to keep an eye on it, but in my experience you'll drive yourself mad following all the advice from the various HVs and midwives you see. It's all contradictory - everyone tells you something different. So difficult for new mums to navigate.

LER2023 · 07/03/2026 13:35

Dont wake her. She will get into the routine of waking. I did this mistake with my son, hes 4 month old and is waking 2 - 3 times a night for milk and im putting that down to waking every 4 hours for feeds from birth as told to do from my HV.
I regret it now because i havrnt had a full night sleep since i was 20 weeks pregnant.
Dont wake her, shes happy, content and feeding ok as far as you're aware. You're petite, she will be, she will probably put more weight on when shes eating food.
Dont worry too much about it

yoshiblue · 07/03/2026 13:42

Never wake a sleeping baby! The end!

wishIwasonholiday10 · 09/03/2026 07:40

As long as she is gaining weight it should be OK to leave her. My DD (15 weeks) is below the 0.4 centile line and I am waking her once during the night 5 hr after putting her in the Next to Me (probably about 6 hr from the start of her last feed of the day). The health visitor would have me waking her every 3 hr but the paediatrician agreed with the 5 hr plan so I have just one wakeup on a good night. If she was a bit bigger I would let her sleep.

Tamboreen · 09/03/2026 10:32

I wouldn't wake her, she's gaining weight and happy. Just keep getting her weighed every week or 2 just to monitor her as she's on the smaller side but as long as her weight is increasing steadily, I wouldn't think there's anything to worry about.

angelcake20 · 09/03/2026 11:21

I was told to wake DS at 4 weeks when he was sleeping for 6 hour stretches. I tried a couple of times but he wouldn't wake enough to feed so I decided to count my blessings. By 11 weeks he’d have been sleeping for at least 8 hours and it sounds fine. He never cried for food and was fed every 4-5 hours during the day. I would say though that 3-4oz doesn’t sound like a lot at that age. Would she take more, less often?
