My 2 year old grandson can now unbuckle his car seat. Can anyone recommend any devices or tricks to stop him doing this please.

My friend's daughter was bad for this. They got a seat that had a sort of laptable/bar across (she looked a bit like she was on a fairground ride!) it helped but I don't know what the name of this was.

When mine did it I tied a scarf around it to sort of cover the mechanism but still giving me quick access in case of emergency. This coupled with stern talks each time it happened were enough to discourage it but depends on the child I think!

Is he quite receptive to rules and telling people what to do? My toddler responded well to being made the ‘seatbelt monitor’ and we told her it’s very important everyone is wearing their seatbelt and that she is in charge of it. She stopped getting out once we told her that but she loves telling everyone what to do so may not work for all kids.

I'm assuming you're looking for something more practical than tell him not to do it, expect compliance and follow through with consequences if he does?

You can get buckle locks that go over the car seat buckle and are unlocked with a 'key' you have. But if you have the key and are injured in an accident it would be very difficult for someone to get him out quickly if they need to.

Other than that you might have to stop driving him if he won't stop

Rearfacing car seat in the front seat, with the airbag turned off, can help. Makes it easier to monitor and give a stern no!

You can get Velcro buckle guards that are off-putting on Amazon. If you do get a buckle guard, make sure it's easy for adults to remove in emergencies, and think about having a seatbelt cutter to hand in the car.

Prickly side of velcro stuck to the buckle is enough to discourage some children without actually interfering with undoing the buckle in an emergency.
