12 month old not eating mum anymore

Not sure what to do. He used to eat anything and everything, but now refuses most things. He'll religiously eat a bowl of weetabix and banana for breakfast, but now refuses nearly all lunches and dinners. He'll happily eat a croissant, flapjack, cheese and most fruit, but nothing substantial. Throws all lunches and dinners on the floor and won't let me get more than a few mouthfuls in if I feed it to him. It's been going on a while now and I'm getting concerned. He still breastfeeds so that reassures me a tiny bit, but he's not eating anything substantial. I feed him all healthy homecooked meals like fish, chicken etc, which he used to love but hardly touches now. What do I do?

He’s probably not hungry. Does he breast feed a lot? Flapjacks and croissants are filling so maybe don’t give those and don’t breast feed before meals.

I don't give him croissants and Flapjacks a lot, I'm just naming the things he will eat. Even if he hasn't had any snacks whatsoever he still won't eat lunch or dinner, so he can effectively go without all day, so I don't think it's that he's not hungry. He breastfeeds before naps and at bedtime, and comfort feeds a lot some nights. Not sure if he's actually feeding or just sucking for comfort.

My DD did this, would scoff breakfast and then turned her nose up at lunch and dinner. I was really stressed until DMIL said ‘Maddie, those lovely homemade baby meals you have in the freezer, give her one for breakfast tomorrow’. I was like 🤔, lo and behold scoffed a cottage pie at 7.30am the next morning. Then had her weetabix for lunch! Sounds odd I guess, but food is food. It didn’t last long, a few weeks later shecwas back to eating ‘normal’ meals.

You will have this on and off for years. They go through phases. Take the pressure off.

Sometimes it's because the growth slows down a bit. Other times it's molars, they come through between 12-18 months and really puts them off their food

When I read the title I wondered if “eating mum” was a strange term for breastfeeding 😂😂

herbalteabag · 26/02/2026 18:32

I do remember watching a parenting show once where an amount of food was put on a plate to show how much a toddler needs and it was barely anything compared to the portions I'd been offering. Perhaps if he's had a biggish breakfast he's not hungry? I say this as someone who used to get really stressed about my children not eating, but now they're adults and fine!

Do you have a health visitor?

I remember my DS going from eating an absolute truck load (e.g. adult size portion of lasagne at 11 months) to about 3 peas a day at 12-14 months. He then started to eat properly again a few months later. He just seemed to be far more interested in stuff that wasn't food to be honest.
