What age did your babies stop wearing sleepsuits?

My little boy is coming up to 11 months and I still have him in sleepsuits a lot of the time. Always for bed with a sleeping bag. And most days with a vest underneath and a jumper on top because of how cold it is. He has nice sets too, which he wears here and there. But because he mostly naps in his cot, I find it a bit of a faff changing him back into his sleepsuit twice a day for his naps, then back out of it again. It's just easier to pop him in his sleeping bag. 🫣

Now he's nearing a year, I'm wondering what's best to buy? More sleepsuits in the next size up, or just pyjamas and sets/rompers for the day? Both?

By the time she was weaning (5-6 months) we migrated to leggings and a top vs sleep suits.

Sleep suits were great when she was little, but when she had spilt-food to add into the mix, it made sense to dress her top and bottom half separately so one could be changed if the other was still clean.

Stick with what works best for you. Your little boy isn't going to care what he's wearing as long as it doesn't affect his mobility.

Before that, both mine were running about by 9 months, crawling before that, way too young! Both winter babies so switched to dresses (girls!) in the summer and just added tights or dungarees and tops one winter returned, around which time they were walking so needed shoes anyway. They stayed in clothes all day, never heard of anyone changing for naps. That said they both dated the cot

I switched when they started sitting up I think, so around 5-6 months. Not necessarily if we were at home but definitely out and about.

I never put them back in a sleep suit for naps though. When they were little they'd stay in a sleep suit until after their first nap and by the time they were on one nap around 10 months we would already be out and about and dressed in the morning and they would maybe be napping in the car, pram or occasionally bed. But I just put them down as they were.

Not sure it really matters though, do whatever works!

For bed, we only stopped sleepsuits at around 2y.

For the daytime, I switched to joggers / leggings plus a top around 6months and definitely by the time both my DDs went to nursery at 10months. Will he going into childcare? If so, might be worth getting him used to "day" clothes in preparation. You can get some nice soft matching sets that are almost like pjs really.

I never used to change into a sleepsuit for a daytime nap though - just took any warm jumpers off and popped them in a sleepsack. The only time we would change is if one of them was really messy.

Mine was wearing a mixture of sleepsuits and outfits from around 3/4 months. I never changed clothes for naps though, it felt like creating more work for myself!

Nursemumma92 · 21/02/2026 08:41

My oldest DD is so tall that by 6-9 months I was putting her in pyjamas or long sleeve/leg rompers as her legs wouldn't fit in the sleepsuits.

My youngest wore them at night only until about 18 months but never during the day from about 7 months and was crawling by then.

I would say you are fine to get some more for night time but as they get more mobile, sleepsuits become more of a hindrance to that. I never changed mine for naps though, just put in sleeping bag as they were minus the jumper/cardigan.

I would just do whatever works for you. I think I kept mine in sleepsuits until they were around 9/10 months, while occasionally wearing the odd outfit. I do remember being in the minority though, but I just found it easier.

When they did wear normal clothes at that age, I definitely didn’t change them into sleepsuits for a nap. Just left them in their normal clothing. There is a chance I’m a scruff though!!

Thank you for your replies 😊

I've only been changing him for naps because most of his outfits have knitted/thick trousers and would be too hot for him to sleep in with a sleeping bag on top. But as the weather changes, this will obviously not be the case anymore!

It's just dawned on me that I'll need to buy new bits soon because he usually grows out of his size a bit earlier. He can crawl and his outfits dont make a difference. He's not walking yet, but as soon as he shows signs of starting, I wont be dressing him in sleepsuits, unless footless.

Side point, I also love sleepsuits because I feel like they look like a baby for a bit longer and they're cute 🙈 but he's going to be a toddler soon! Agghh, how is my baby already nearly 1! 🥹

Sleepsuits for bed until around 18 months. During the day, until around 6 months.

Emmz1510 · 21/02/2026 14:36

I think it was around the time she started walking, so about 17 months, if you mean the footed/babygro kind. She still sometimes wore a footless onesie to bed sometimes until she was 3ish, especially in winter.

Floundering66 · 21/02/2026 14:59

I did sleep suits at night for around 18 months, then he started to prefer pyjamas.
I always did outfits for the day from 3 months - for this time of year I’d typically do leggings, long sleeved vest and a top/ jumper. For a nap I’ll pop the jumper off for his nap.

user2848502016 · 21/02/2026 15:27

By around 4-6 months mine were more in clothes during the day and sleepsuits at night, then when they start pulling themselves up and cruising around furniture it’s best to have bare feet so pyjamas or footless onesies at night

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 21/02/2026 15:32

Depends on season they were born in. If still winter at 18m then why not as warmer, but if summer then they’ll prefer PJ shorts.

sleeping bags I used until almost age 3 as mine wriggled so much duvets weren’t an option
