Hi all, i am will be a FTM (as my name suggests!) in April and I've just found out about owlet socks - are these worth getting? I am highly anxious so I think one may be helpful for me but they are super expensive so I'm keen to get others' views before I part with the cash. Also I wonder if it may unnecessarily feed my anxiety if I want to check it all the time? Keen to hear your thoughts!

I think it'll only feed your anxiety. I've heard the owlet can often send false alerts! Most important is you follow safe sleep guidance, look at the Lullaby trust. I'd spend your money on getting some counselling before baby arrives.

I used one

never had a false alarm, the one time
it did go off- it actually did report that my daughter was sick. Recorded a very high heart rate and temp, picked her up, she projectile vomited and had a nasty nasty virus.

didn’t ’feed my anxiety’- it actually gave me peace of mind as a new mum.

But didn’t feel like I needed it for second baby, so sold it and didn’t use

I would buy one second hand if you are going to get one

I hear all the time on here they’ll feed your anxiety, but I loved mine.
it really reassured me and helped me get some sleep. I used it for the first 6 months and the only time I got a false alarm was when I used the wrong size sock

you could buy it and not open it, and then if when you get home with baby you find yourself anxious you can open it then, and at least your have it. Or if you think you don’t need it you can return it

My newborn never slept long enough for me to worry 😂 we had a nanit with the breathing band thing and just never used it. I did breastfeed and always followed safe sleep advice though.

It’s not something I’d heard of before but if I was PG now, which is unlikely, I woukd consider getting this.

We had one of those pads that first under the mattress that everyone said woukd feed anxiety and actually it did the opposite.

i had one because baby was prem and on oxygen, for a full term birth I wouldn’t say it was needed, but whatever helps you sleep at night . Just be mindful that the settings in it are actually low in terms of when it alarms. So oxygen levels it will only alarm when they drop to around 80% - for a “normal child” you want levels to be high 90s. This isn’t able to be changed - I contacted owlet directly . So if you’re relying on it for peace of mind it’s actually quite a late detector of a problem in my experience.

i used it to support what I already knew - that I needed to increase oxygen for baby and get to a hospital ! Xx

We loved ours and it really helped lessen anxiety. Never had a false alarm with it! They are expensive though so 2nd hand might be better

The Owlet saved the life of my nephew.

At 3 months old, he had been struggling with his breathing, with low oxygen stats, and had been hospitalised with bronchiolitus (spelling?)

My DSis, asked me about them, as he had been very poorly. I had heard that they were good, and she purchased them

2 weeks later, he went into cardiac arrest, at 4 months old. The Owlet alarmed immediately, and my sister was able to perform chest compressions without delay, and had restarted his heart by the time the ambulance arrived. He crashed twice more that day, once in the ambulance, once in hospital.

He needed to have emergency surgery, he had a twisted stomach, so his stomach acid was being forced up into his lungs, which caused the cardiac arrests.

He's a cheeky, thriving little 3yo now, with the loveliest smile ever. He still uses the Owlet, every night.

I think it depends on how you are as a person. For some people the reassurance is beneficial, my sister used one and found she was obsessively checking everything and ended up having to get rid of it but she’s a very anxious person in general.
one of my children was premature so we were advised when he left hospital to get a breathing sensor, we had the odd false alarm. Started using it with my second full term child and it just caused me to fixate so stopped, didn’t even try one with our third.
I think one of the concerns is it can cause parents to rely on the information relayed instead of focusing in on baby so could give false reassurance or cause parents to be less responsive in theory. I’ve had plenty of friends who’ve loved the owlet though!

I just had my first baby in October! I always had anxiety but developed PPA around 6 weeks postpartum. It was BAD. I saw so many people saying the owlet made their anxiety worse but for me, it has been a godsend
My baby had severe reflux and could not lay down flat for the first two months of her life. This meant that she had to sleep on my chest every night. I was terrified for her having to sleep in a way that didn’t follow the safe sleep guidelines but I truly had no choice. The owlet gave me the reassurance I needed.
I use it every night and sometimes for naps now that she’s starting to roll over and it gives me peace of mind. I really don’t even check the app other than when I first put it on her to make sure it’s working.
When I first developed PPA, I was constantly checking her breathing at night and could not sleep. Once I was using the owlet, I would just take a peek at the app if I was feeling nervous. That probably only lasted a week and then I stopped checking the app because the alarm will go off if the oxygen drops below 90%. I 100% recommend this product.
