joggers- tall+slim DC

Hi sorry posting bc the main boards scare me, (MN can get heated over minor things) and wasn't sure if I could post in s&b for kids clothes recommendations.

My dc is very tall for their age (130cm tall, 95 centile) and most of their height is in their legs. So if their joggers fit them on the waist, the hem is at half mast, mid calf, and if it fits them on the leg, then the waist is too big, even with the waist adjusters (H&M have them on the inside of their trousers and jeans, and even with a belt it's still a bit gappy, which when you have an active DC is still a bit too gappy)

My dc prefers joggers but if there's any jeans that anyone else knows is reliable for the long of leg and slim of torso then that would be helpful too.

I have tried Next, George, H+M, Nutmeg were better but not perfect...does anyone have a failsafe? My dc is in ks1 and I envisage the next decade of my life spent tracking down trousers that fit!!! We're a tall family but even so I am unprepared for this tallness. Tia x

Girls' jeggings as straight-cut jeans – both H&M and Next do them in normal denim rather then the jegging stuff. Similarly, girls' joggers are often a bit slimmer cut. Girls' cord leggings might also be a useful option. We've had quite a few Morrisons ones in black, navy, grey, dark green.

For joggers and pull-on style jeans, often the waistband is just a tube, so you can unpick a few stitches at the back, thread a new piece of elastic round, sew the ends together, and close it back up. Very quick once you've done it a few times, but won't work with proper jeans with a button and zip.

Polarn o pyret (second hand on vinted) are good, designed for tall Scandi kids. They have the waistband adjuster. The largest sizes might still fit? I think they go to age 10. Age 8-9 is 134cm height.

thankyou! I will do some googling this afternoon 💙

I have same issue. Next seem a bit better and are they only thing that work for us, but I think they are nearer to being just a size smaller than labelled, iyswim! H&M were always far too wide so I haven't looked at their joggers in years.

Next do have "longer length" joggers but you really have to search for them. My son didn't like them as they were on the tighter leg side, but worth a look.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/02/2026 13:10

H&M and Zara have been my failsafe for lanky skinny children into teens. For girls at any rate. Not sure how their boys clothes do

OfAllThePlaces · 19/02/2026 13:12

Next and M&S were my go to for my very tall children.

CliveBixbee · 19/02/2026 13:13

Would also recommend looking at Scandi brands - DS has lived in Lindex leggings/joggers since he was small and his latest sets at 134cm still come with the adjustable waist band, though even as are they are definitely slimmer than Next etc.

SaffyWall · 19/02/2026 13:34

Mango Kids and Uniqlo are good for tall, slim kids.

KitchenQuestion · 19/02/2026 13:46

I find the skinny fit joggers from Next are best for my son with a similar problem. They do have super skinny fit or longer length skinny which were even better for fit but scratchy inside so my son won’t wear them.

He is only 4 so isn’t fussed about looking fashionable, and doesn’t need to look smart.

MilkLady02 · 19/02/2026 13:53

Same problem and all the brands mentioned so far are way too wide in the waist! Canterbury of New Zealand joggers are the best fit I’ve found. I have a very tall very slim 7y/o and these are the only trousers he has that haven’t needed taking in at the waist.
I bought jeans from polarn o pyret which are fine but I have to do the waist adjusters up so much that they look a bit ridiculous! But jumpers cover the waistband.

I had this issue. I spent years taking in waists on everything. H&M usually the best for this age, but I still had to take them in. You can also buy the elastic with button holes to take in any pair you find.

PevenseygirlQQ · 19/02/2026 14:03

Have you tried the mens sizes in H&M my son is very tall and skinny, I’ve managed to get him jeans/trousers xs or 26/28/30. whatever he is waist.

For tracksuits I get him s or xs for nike/Adidas etc

However saying this he is getting taller but not wider so I’ll be in the same position soon!

Owl86 · 21/02/2026 08:02

Next do slim fit joggers which are 5cm narrower in the waist than their standard fit joggers. They also have a functional drawstring.

Toastersandkettles · 21/02/2026 08:16

Vertbaudet does narrow hip fitting joggers and trousers that are good for slim DCs.

IceIceSlippyIce · 21/02/2026 08:42

Failed miserably with joggers for DS1 until he was tall enough for men's sizes.
PE was done in too short joggers. Home wear was softest trousers we could find with adjustable waists, or shorts.
TBF, it is MUCH easier with trousers in general now we can buy men's (26W, 32L - for comparison M&S standard school trousers have a 26' waist for 11 year olds)

Boobyslims · 21/02/2026 11:52

Totally hear you! My son is 98 percentile for height and so skinny, he’s like a reed! School uniform is tracksuit five days a week (bliss) and the only tracksuits bottoms that I can go UP in two age groups but not lose him on the waist are M&S.

he is 10 and has outgrown the age 12s. Just about to order the next age up.

halftermhalfawake · 21/02/2026 12:09

the scandi brands are a good idea, dc eats well but any calories seem to go "oh lets just make longer femurs" I remember I got through the toddler years in girls leggings once potty trained I lost that helpful extra padding in the bum

Livpool · 21/02/2026 12:38

Same here - Next have been ok but latest pair I got in size up won’t fit for long! Zara and M&S usually too. Any drawstring waist if jogging-style pants

MilkLady02 · 21/02/2026 17:28

I’m surprised at the number of posters recommending M and S. They fall off my DS, will not stay up! Drawstring just means I’ve tied him in and you lose the elastic nature of the waist, which when younger just made going to the toilet more tricky as he was tied into his trousers! Most waist sizes for age 6-7 are 23 ins. DS is 21 ins and way taller than age 6-7. Maybe I’ll have to have another look in M and S but I can’t imagine the waist is any smaller.
Skinny fit usually means skinny on the calf but still a 23 in waist. It would be so much easier with waist and length measurements like adult clothes rather than ages that get wider as they get longer!

Same. I've stacks of m&s kids' joggers, unworn for this reason (kept in the hope they'll grow into them). But haven't tried them in the past 5 years or so.

halftermhalfawake · 21/02/2026 18:28

when dc was younger I also experimented with skinny fit jeans but for some reason the ones I tried had no give in the ankle at all, they've always had long feet (already in grown up size 1!) and I remember doing a nappy change at about 15 months, (long and lean toddler, gangly feet) navigating these narrow ankle jeans with wriggly, tickley feet in a baby change and it was such a palaver. But the waist stayed up!

Abercrombie Kids, Zara Kids. Look on Vinted for these.
