9 month old hates sitting

My 9 month old only wants to lie on her back! She can sit independently and does sometimes for a couple of minutes or so if sufficiently distracted but will very quickly throw herself backwards to lie down. Even if she is in a high chair or sitting on your lap she will often thrust backwards in an attempt to lie down. She’s not crawling either so it’s not because she wants to crawl. She does roll and will roll/pivot to get what she wants but mostly she lies on her back playing with a toy. Not sure what to do, DS was standing up and cruising at this point and this little madam seems to just want to lie down forever! 😅

Then let her lie down? Cant see why it matters. I never did tummy time or anything to encourage moving, she walked fine at 13 months .

I’d be concerned about core strength and muscle laxitude. My trio were walking cruising by 9 mths.
Sounds like a serious motor delay.

If you’re worried maybe just get it checked out, if nothing else to give you peace of mind. My boy was a late crawler and walker, he didn’t really start rolling until 11 months but then crawled very soon after, and then didn’t walk until 17 months. He turned two a couple of months ago and his nursery tell me he’s now the fastest child in the room!

9 months is quite early to be cruising however i would expect a baby to be sitting confidently by 9 months so it's a question of she doesn't want to or she can't? Not crawling or walking by this stage is within normal range though.

OP - i would get it checked for peace of mind. she might just be being stubborn or there may be a reason she doesn't like to sit. speak to a health visitor or gp if you can

Nonsense, this is well within tolerance. Might it be behind most babies? Sure, but it's not out of the ordinary.

Some babies are just "floor babies" and prefer being close to the ground. They'll do it in good time. Our DS could sit at 9 months but their balance wasn't great, and it's only really from 11 months they started actively choosing this as their preferred position of playtime. No indication of cruising or walking anytime soon and that's totally fine too.

All totally normal.

My DS wouldn't sit at 9 months. He'd briefly entertain the highchair but that's it. He would roll everywhere to get what he wanted until he started commando crawling around 10 months. He started cruising around furniture around 11 months but would not take a step if we held his hands. He didn't sit independently until after 12 months. He was referred for a paediatric exam by the HV at around 9 months because he wasn't sitting but all was found to be in order. He walked just shy of 15 months and went from first steps to running, no joke, in 3 days. He was and still is (18 years old now), fiercely independent and won't accept help with anything and wouldn't do anything until he could do it properly or he saw the point in doing it.

She definitely can because she will sit for a while if she’s sufficiently distracted! She just really doesn’t want to, whether she’s sitting independently or supported (eg in high chair) she keeps trying to lie down. Even in the car seat she will rock back and forth bashing against the back like she’s trying to push herself into a lying down position. She was a late roller as well, only started at 7.5 months.

Could be nothing or could be a sign of low muscle tone or similar. I would also get her checked out although in my experience the NHS is very much wait and see with this sort of thing.

It's very likely just her own developmental pathway, but that she doesn't like sitting even support would have me questioning if it's uncomfortable for her. Any issues with reflux?

DD2 used to be sick within seconds of sitting up or lying on her tummy, and she really, really struggled with the curled up and reclined position of infant carriers – we basically didn't use the car until she was about a year and could move into a more upright seat.
