Help with DS hair

Help needed with DS hair (3Yrs) ! It’s cut every 6 weeks but quickly becomes very messy looking as it doesn't stay down after brushing. I use a detangle spray to wet his hair down and brush but it doesn't seem to help!

Has anyone got any hair tips on how to make his hair look tidy, without using any harsh products!

Have you ever let it grow to see if it's curly? Looks like half of it is trying to go curly? Is that the side he sleeps on?

StillInMyPJJs · 17/02/2026 15:30

His hair is naturally curly yes. It used be longer when he was younger! He sleeps all sorts of directions

I wouldn't brush it,I'd dampen it every morning and spritz with a leave in conditioner and scrunch it up using my fingers.

Well that'll be why it's messy! You're trying to style curly hair straight. My son has very curly hair, I wash it, don't brush it and it dries while he sleeps. He wakes up with super curly hair that isn't frizzy. It gets brushed about once every 8 weeks at the hairdressers. Do you not like it curly?

StillInMyPJJs · 17/02/2026 20:53

No I'm not styling curly hair straight. His hair is not curly anymore. It was curly as a baby and now it is as shown in the photo. It’s mainly straight and wavy in parts.

Oh ok, i wonder if it would go curly again if it grew a little longer. Can't help since my only experience is with my sons hair which is obviously very low maintenance 🤣

Looks like he's got a cow lick.
Google: "best boys hair cuts with cow licks" and find a good barber. 🙂

My son's hair is like this. It is wavy - if it's at a short length it looks neat but if it's at an awkward length random bits decide to stick out.

I cut my son's hair with clippers approx every 6 weeks and that seems to mostly keep it neat enough. I see you're already cutting that frequently so I can only suggest maybe try going a bit shorter? It can't go too crazy when it's short because there isn't enough length to see much of a wave if you see what I mean.

Is he bothered about it himself? At age 3 I'd just let him have wild hair and not worry about it. (Not that it is particularly wild, it looks very ordinary). I definitely wouldn't be bothering with sprays and things.

Does it need to be tidy? He's three. As long as it's not getting long and tangled then it's fine.

DS's hair used to stick up at the back, still does sometimes. It's just how his hair is. And I can't see what's wrong in the picture.

ah I dont have kids but it looks very cute to me. my friends who had kids left their hair to be way longer than this at 3 so I dont have any advice - like proper long to their shoulders!
