4yr DS is having his tonsils and possible adenoids out next week. Anyone got any advice? Im bricking it, mainly cause hes such a mommys boy and is my little shadow and i have to be within eye range at all times! But also this boy is constantly hungry i have no idea how hes going to cope not eating for a while before his operation! Any advice welcome 😉

My 3 year old daughter got them out a few weeks ago, the fasting was better than I thought before the operation. She was allowed water and 7up up to an hour beforehand. I think it was an 8 hour fasting period in total and she was distracted with the 7up as she’s not usually allowed that. Also movies on the iPad in hospital and they will be tired from not eating so won’t have energy for much else, she did a bit of colouring too. It all went well and she is breathing much better at night now. Best of luck with it

Dd was 5 when she had hers out, it made such a difference.
All 3 of my dc have had multiple GA make sure you have plenty to distract them with before, the younger ones get to go to theatre first usually so not as long a wait. When dc is in theatre force yourself to eat and drink so you have the energy when they come round.
Make sure you have plenty of analgesia in and keep it up even if they seem better it often gets worse mid week.
Put a towel over pillows incase of bleeding.
Have lots of soft foods in. When dd had hers she lived on really cold foods, when I had mine removed (as an adult) I could only tolerate luke warm foods. Dd liked yoghurt, cold rice pudding with frozen fruits and ice cream. I lived on scrambled egg and luke warm soups. So everyone is different. Dont worry if they dont eat, just keep offering, fluids are more important the first few days.

Hi @Username0110 the process for us was very simple the op took 20mins and my child recovered very well in the first week. I preface this by saying that I AM NOT A DOCTOR You need to be aware that after about 7-10 days the scabs fall off and there is a possibility of bleeding. This happened to my child, but the bleeding was severe and required hospital adminission.

My child is 100% fine now but had I not know of the chance I wouldn't have known to take them in and it went from a tiny bit of blood on spitting to full on large volumes very quickly. This isn't meant to scare you. Just be informed.

It's still the best thing we did for them as breathing and infection is so much better since.

Best of luck 🙏

My DS had this aged 3 and it really helped him. His tonsils were stage 4, practically blocking his airway.

The advice was to eat normally after the op not give soft food only. Anything with texture actually helps with healing. Keep ice pops ready, they will help with swelling etc. Keep the medication up. Mine recovered in about a week.

Mine had hers done 6 months ago just before she turned 4.
Coblation is the best method to reduce risk of bleeding after.

Our was first on the list for the op in the morning so not long to wait without food. Usually the youngest go first.

Eat whatever they want after, hard or soft. Keep up the pain relief on schedule rather than waiting for them to be in pain.

Her coming round from anaesthetic was very very distressing, completely wild and screaming and thrashing. I had to climb on the bed and restrain her while they wheeled us back to the ward. They do warn you of this but it’s still quite extreme.

When I had mine done years ago, you were told to eat cornflakes after and not just soft foods.
