I am such a hoarder and each occasion I buy stuff to make the floor more full type of thing! I can't name the christmas' and birthdays for my 4 and 2yo thay I looked back and thought shouldve left that or got x instead of y etc

I am in let's keep what works for us mode. Bit tough but my 4yo has some toys and hes said hes happy for them to go to a nans house (luckily both nans for my boys are willing to take some toys in, anything that they don't play with at all is charity shop)

How do I be harsh and cut out some toys

What are top toys I should keep

Main faves are

Magna tiles/stickle bricks/any sort of lego building stuff
Figures (characters animals)
Cars vehicles, i am clearing out some that have broken parts etc
Books (whole sideboard full of them)
Puzzles and games we love Orchard toys stuff
Crafts box - paints playdougj pencils etc
Toy kitchen

A good thing to do is pack some stuff away in boxes (out of sight if you have somewhere to store), and rotate what they have access to. It declutters your space, and allows a ‘refresh’ and regular novelty factor :)

Didn't include we do have outdoor stuff

Bikes
Scooters
Slide
Balls
Goal
Mud kitchen

And classics
Dress up outfits
Role play - doctor set, Builder tools, small doll pram and doll
Wooden train set

Good idea thank you!

I need to change it up we have a huge kallax which is good but we have big toys then lots and lots of little toys so need to make it more purposeful

I seen videos online of people with 2 kids like me in what seems like similar sixe houses and their toy rotationannd units are so much more organised !

This is probably not helpful but they will declutter themselves when they grow to use devices and all their entertainment is electronic! I have embraced the big toys as I think open ended play can make use of all sorts of objects and it encourages creativity. We have a lot of clutter but I'm planning to go more vertical with storage to allow us to rotate a bit more. But I think it's good to have a wide range of toys to help them develop in different ways.

I have one or two of each type out at once. Mine are younger so it's like one stacker, one sorter, one set of bricks, a few puzzles, a doll and accessories, cars and mat or trains, etc

The rest goes away out of sight. So much easier to manage and they are so excited when the fresh toys come out again.

We always have accessible the open ended play toys:

Construction toys (blocks, lego, duplo, magnatiles etc)
Vehicles
Figurines (animals, characters, barbie etc)
Playmobil
Role play
Play kitchen and food

And I rotate things like puzzles, games, remote control cars, any battery operated toys, anything that I has a finite attention span because I find they are the things that get discarded and make a mess.

We also always have craft supplies available and outdoor toys are mud kitchen, bikes, little wheelbarrows and trowels!

First optimise storage and then break down toys into

  • Out and currently being played with
  • Often are played with store accessibly
  • Medium termed storage

Periodically go through the medium storage, are they not in use as they had forgotten them or because they are no longer age appropriate? Separate those out for donation etc and give a month before doing so.

Then look at the buying patterns - one of the things that has helped us keep on top of things is to have kept with a theme which means that a lot of the toys have been multi-purpose. We chose "farms" as ours this means we have a farm animal shape sorter, threading toys etc long out grown for their original purpose but add together nicely with her trainset and tractors so is still being actively played with. She now has Sylvanian families and they have a camper van and they can go camping on the farm.

We were overrun with craft projects. We had painting shells and stones and figurines and paint by numbers all in massive boxes and tiny pots of paint. I got a tower storage for it all and have a layer of paints and a layer of things to be painted, added all of the pens and crayons too. It's halved the amount of space everywhere takes up.
I save shoe boxes as I find they are a handy size for storing everything together and they stack nicely.
I also love the plastic box shop and have big tubs from there for the trains, Duplo and dress up stuff.

Books we try to start with the library and only buy series that we are happy to read endlessly
