Double stroller - do I bother?

DC1 will be 2y9m when new baby arrives. He's a good walker already but we don't drive so we still take a stroller for longer days out and for travel. But I'm thinking in first few months I would want to mostly baby wear and so DC1 will probably be over 3 when we'd really need to have both in a stroller. Mountain buggy seems to be the best option, although still pricey even second hand. Will I need it though?

If you had a similar age gap, did you bother with a double stroller or did you find it useless?

I had a similar age gap and wasn’t sure for the same reasons. Basically my toddler did a runner one day and I went and bought a buggy the next. It was a god send during maternity, I used to throw them both in it and it was so easy. My DD wouldn’t go near a buggy but was happy to sit in beside the baby. I sold it for a good price once done with it as they do hold their value. So I would say yes get one but a bigger one like an OutnAbout or the mountain buggy.

I had a similar gap and tried with the baby in the sling and toddler in the buggy but three months in bought a second hand city mini double. Made life so much easier. I actually ended up using it for over two years and sold it for more than I paid.
Apparently the city mini gt is a bit better off road but mine went most places

Yes, I'd get one. It will save your sanity when it's chucking it down, too hold or too cold, one or all of you are shattered or poorly, you're in a rush, have lots to carry or someone is having a meltdown (including possibly you 😁). They're so much safer if you are next to roads. Your toddler can always hop in and out for playgrounds, sticks, dawdling etc.

I miss my double and my kids have both left school.

Yes I would. I got one second hand.

cheezychipz · 10/02/2026 18:13

I agree that it will save your sanity! When you need to go somewhere or do something quickly, you can strap both in and they are safe, even if yelling or having a tantrum. And you can do longer walks as a family without little legs getting tired and associated whingeing.

I had a 3 year 2 month age gap and regretted not getting one
babywearing and trying to wrestle a 3 year old is very hard work.

MrsClausMaybe · 10/02/2026 18:23

Yes! Get one secondhand with that age gap. You can set up alerts on Facebook marketplace for (keywords) that are (distance) from (your area).

mummybearSW19 · 10/02/2026 18:26

Nah. Get a sling for baby. Keep a stroller for toddler that baby can use too. And get one of those board things fo the back for emergencies when you are too tired to carry

Stickytoffeetartt · 10/02/2026 18:37

You will absolutely need it if your dc1 is anything like mine. (Running off, getting tired, busy roads nearby) You could try to get a good one on Marketplace, the out n about double is still really popular.

We had exactly the same age gap and didn’t bother with a double stroller - no regrets! We briefly used a buggy board, but our eldest is a champion walker and eventually moved onto a scooter.

Exploredoor · 10/02/2026 19:55

I had a double for the same age gap. It was secondhand and worth it for the occasions I used it. I also used a sling and single on some trips as it was easier, sometimes used a single and buggy board, and we also used 2 singles on days when we had 2 adults as it was easier.

LaVitesse2022 · 10/02/2026 20:01

All right, you've all convinced me! I think given we use public transport and walk so much a stroller for both children seems more indispensable than if we had a car

I had the same age gap and bought a second hand double buggy. Didn’t use it all the time but was handy to have for the first 6 months or so for days out and holidays
