DS9 smells like boy

yellowgecko · 05/02/2026 09:13

He’s only 9 and the boy smell has been there for at least 12 months. He showers every day, I wash his hair 3 times a week and I’ve got him one of those kid-friendly deodorants.
Tops are washed daily.
It got worse recently, and I think he’s not been washing properly, so I’m checking post-shower and sending him back in if I can still smell him.

What else can I do?? I know that kids can / will smell, but he’s 9, not a teenager yet 😢 I can’t spray him with Lynx yet (or whatever the cool kids smell like these days). Any advice appreciated. I’m trying so hard to be casual and not give him a complex about it. I’m worried kids at school will notice and be mean, especially when he’s been running / sweating. He’s skinny, average height, very active.

I’d change his soap as a starting point. But hormones and hormones so you can’t always control it.

OriginalSkang · 05/02/2026 09:15

Lynx wouldn't do anything for BO as its just a body spray

I would buy some proper deodorant, right guard or something

RoseDog · 05/02/2026 09:16

Wash with bar soap in sweaty areas and a proper antiperspirant and avoid lynx at all times! Wash clothes in biological washing powder.

My daughter was the same from around age 6. Tea tree oil is great for cleaning underarms then a strong natural deodorant. A natural brand Conchus does one that comes in a tin and it's the best deodorant I've ever used.

24Dogcuddler · 05/02/2026 09:20

Maybe his tops or shirts need extra treatment under the arms before washing? Good that you are checking that he’s washed properly too.

Springtimewillbespringing · 05/02/2026 09:21

Have you told how to wash properly? Remind him how to do it, yy to bar soap and get him a proper deodarant and daily hair washing.

DuuuhDunDuuhDunDuhDunDuhDun · 05/02/2026 09:22

Proper soap bar, not body wash.. no body sprays.. they aren’t anti-perspirant.. which is what everyone needs.

my husband didn’t know the difference between body spray and anti-perspirant in his 20’s 😭 has to explain it to him and now he’s much less pongy.

lhsfhhh · 05/02/2026 09:23

Genuine question, what does a “boy” smell like? Are you talking about BO?

Favouritefruits · 05/02/2026 09:27

At 9 I bet he’s just rinsing with water and wetting the soap in case you check! 😂

Twoshoesnewshoes · 05/02/2026 09:29

Yep definitely a good anti persprant, spray not stick, right guard is good.

Jamfirstest · 05/02/2026 09:29

It needs to be bar soap and not shower gel and proper anti perspirant. I bought dd1 Mitchum at that age and it did the trick.

Seeline · 05/02/2026 09:32

Is he washing his hair properly - giving his scalp a really good scrub and rinsing thoroughly?
My DSs hair/head could smell bad, way before the BO stage started.

Dollymylove · 05/02/2026 09:40

I bought some stuff from the pharmacy for my son, unfortunately I cant remember its name but it was good. From 13 he had very strong BO. It settled down after a couple of years. My DGD is 10 and the hormones are racing like formula one.
Some start early, some start later its a bit of a lottery

AngelinaFibres · 05/02/2026 09:47

Is he washing in all his nooks and crannies with soap? Knowing you should be washing around your balls and bum crack and actually doing it are 2 different things. Is he washing his hair with shampoo or just wetting it? Are you washing clothes at 40° with biological washing powder? Eco stuff and 30° is all lovely but fairly useless. I'd get him a proper adult deodorant. How often are his sheets changed ? Do you ever wash/ replace pillows ? They absorb a huge amount of head sweat over the years.

Jamfirstest · 05/02/2026 09:55

Also you need to use disinfectant in the washing machine any will do

Definitely go natural on the deodorant

Shinyandnew1 · 05/02/2026 09:58

Bar soap and show him how to use it. Tell him he needs to clean properly or he'll have to go back again!

Wash bedding, towel and clothes regularly with some Dettox laundry sanitiser.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 05/02/2026 09:59

We all use Dettol antibacterial soap.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 05/02/2026 10:01

Oh and Dettol antibacterial laundry cleanser, my husband runs and cycles a lot so this is great for making sure clothes are fresh

Tintarella · 05/02/2026 10:14

Having recently stepped into a Yr 4 classroom at pick-up time I can assure you he won't be the only one of his pals to be having these issues!

I think it is partly the hormones kicking in. 9 just feels so young 😞

I think Right Guard has zinc or something that is not recommended for kids, (lots of the adult ones do) so I bought Salt of the Earth roll on. It has natural ingredients but I don’t think it’s really doing anything

Bar soap and then washed and rinsed TWICE

BCSurvivor · 05/02/2026 11:40

Children develop at different times, and if your 9 year old son is maturing early you can't get away with a child friendly deodorant any more.

He is using bar soap with a sponge, I think he stands under the shower all the time as he’s washing though so it washes off as soon as it’s on!
I wash his bedding weekly, always change the pillow case.
It’s coming home from school where he pongs the most
