Night terrors - 4th night in a row

From researching on the internet I believe my som (aged 3.5) is going through night terrors. It has happened 4 nights in a row now roughly between about 9 and 10pm. He will wake up absolutely screaming, shaking, crying and sweating. Tonight wasn’t as bad as it has been, I made the mistake on the first 2 nights of waking him up and bringing him into the living room straight away which made him panic more I think where he was still half asleep, but last night and tonight were a little more mild as I took a slightly different approach by keeping him in him bed and just being more softly spoken, calm and just laid with him.

This is something I have never dealt with before, I would like to know if there are triggers to this and if anyone has any recommendations on how to stop it. He has recently just had tonsillitis and been quite poorly so I am not sure if this could be a reason for these episodes.

Is this something that can be stopped, or is it a phase most children his age do go through?
thanks in advance

Big hugs it’s scary.

We had it with both DS similar ages and always when they were feeling a bit sick, seems in our case to be linked to a fever, and only lasted a few days at a time. I used to just sit on the bed not talk maybe a shushhhh and just stay there until they settled, which was a matter of minutes.

My son had them a few times, only when he was absolutely exhausted and over tired. Keeping the room dark and lots of hugs back to sleep kept them short, it was almost like he wasn’t fully awake. Putting the light on and waking him fully made the upset last longer. It was just a phase.

Check for worms! Sounds ridiculous but this is how they presented in my then 3.5 year old. We treated with ovex and he was back to normal within the week. Terrifying at the time so you have my sympathies.
