CMPA or breastfeeding issues?

Hello

8 Week old is currently mosty breastfed with one formula feed in the evening. Since around 5 days old baby has had silent reflux, hiccups, excessive gas, a little bit of mucus in nappy but so far no rash or blood in stool & discomfort seemed to be afternoon onwards. As time has gone on baby has gotten worse and worse - he now scrams & arches after every feed, whenever he is put down he wakes up within minutes, at night we just hear gulping & chokng plus grunting. We tried gaviscon but caused constipaton, we have tried switching the formula feed to kendamil goat. Baby has become difficult to burp and when he does they sound wet or he now vomits. He also seems to wake up at 6pm and scream non stop until 1am.

We had his tongue tie cut at 3 weeks and been having osteopathy who didnt find major issues but latch is stll bad - nipples are still red and sore and lipstick shape.

Does this sound like CMPA or potentonally more of a mechanical feeding issue?have tried burping mid feed, letting down into a musline, keeping baby upright - nothing is working.

Sounds exactly like my baby and it was CMPA. I cut dairy and soy out of my diet (completely, you have to be very strict for it to work as dairy protein builds up in the body so a bit of dairy here and there still causes a reaction) and my baby was transformed within 2 weeks.

We tried reintroducing dairy at 4 months, total fail. Tried again at 7 months, no issues thank god.

Tried to give dairy directly and ended up in hospital at 9 months (couldn't stop vomiting).

Tried the dairy ladder at 16 months, successfully. He doesn't like the taste of cow's milk or cheese but he can have it in food so that's made our life easier. So there is hope, they mostly do grow out of it. Weaning was a bit tricky but you get used to cooking without dairy quickly.

Also note, formula is made of cow's milk so if you want to go down this route, you have to EBF. Totally dairy free formula tastes horrible and babies won't drink it, not when they know there is nicer stuff on offer too.

It's certainly worth investigating further but I'd start with an IBCLC if possible. If you can afford a private appointment that's fab but many donate their time to feeding cafés etc if you're lucky enough to have one locally. A GP won't have any training in improving latch and positioning and will likely jump to a medical cause whereas a breastfeeding consultant will improve the breastfeeding and signpost to further services if necessary.

I'd cut the burping if you're breastfeeding. Research has shown that it doesn't make any difference other than increasing the number of times baby is sick.

Sounds like both my daughters and they both just grew out of it around 5/6 months.

Definitely try a lactation consultant, or start using nipple shields to stop any further damage!
