Borrowed Moses basket - do you need to buy a new mattress?

I know the advice is to always buy a new mattress for a different baby but does this apply to moses baskets aswell?

My friend has offered to lend us her moses basket which her DD used for about 3 months - is this ok?

I think you should buy a new one as some research impies that it is bacteria in the mattress that might be inplicated in SIDS.

Having said that, I never did for either of my 2nd hand baskets!

I would always replace a mattress, I think. Though I suppose it might possibly depend how long it was used for...no, actually I think I would always replace it, for the reasons devonblue gave.

I would always buy a new mattress and that is why we have 3 pram and 2 cot mattresses.

Thanks for the replies. That is what I thought but I am guessing a new mattress doesn't cost much less than a new moses basket so not much point in borrowing one really.

Mattresses are cheaper than new moses baskets but often the mattresses are in fact washable - I would be happy to wash and air a second hand mattress and use it for a new baby.
