Toys for travel - 2 year old

I will be travelling to Holland soon with my son who will be turning 2 when we are away.

Can anyone recommend some toys that we could bring with us please, both for the flight, train (3hrs) and also for in the apartment we will be staying?

He’s never used magnetiles before so I will buy some and pack them. I’d love ideas for some small toys that I can pop in the carry on and suitcase that will keep him busy on the train, in restaurants and at the apartment.

We are staying at a center parcs type resort so I imagine we will spend most of the time enjoying the activities but definitely need some toy ideas!

Thank you

Mess free colouring (Crayola)
Early Learning Centre build your own car/plane
Sticker books
Orchard games
If you look in The Works they have little tins with magnetic games in which are good for travel

Also this keeps my 2yo weirdly busy! (Light up busy board)

Colouring and sticker books. Sticker books were particularly great.

I would look for games rather than toys. I couldn’t recommend any specific ones because my youngest is now 7, but we take a travel dominoes set and top trumps for restaurants when travelling.

Honestly though, for the flight and train, I’d let him watch some paw patrol or Bluey or whatever he’s into on a phone or tablet. And bring lots of interesting snacks. Snacks and a bit of tv worked better for travel than games and toys.

Thank you for your suggestions! It’s a nice quick flight so I’m sure that will be fine it’s more the train I worry he will get bored. Will definitely take some snacks and let him have some screen time

Stickers are good, as is mess free colouring
I also used to buy a few small toys from those machines you often see in supermarkets after the checkouts - usually something in a plastic ball. I hope that makes sense?
Check the age suitability but I used to buy 3 or 4 for DD and then let her open them at hourly intervals or similar

I go to Home Bargains and you can get small packs of stickers of all different themes which are great to shove in a bag, neither of mine like sticker books but love stickers and a piece of paper. They have happily stuck them all over a napkin when I've forgotten paper.

I usually pack a couple of cars, paper, crayons, stickers, and a few small books. When they were toddlers I'd take those stacking tubs with us, don't take up much space, great for building towers and for bath time/showers in unfamiliar bathrooms!

  • A few small cars, plastic animals, or similar.
  • A tub or two of playdoh and a few bits for it can be good if you'll have a table where you're staying.
  • Stacking cups – very compact, building, bath toy, homes for animals/cars, tea parties, etc.
  • Simple jigsaws if he's started doing them – get a cheap 4-in-a-box type pack, take in little plastic bags, and then it doesn't matter too much if a piece gets lost.
  • A pack of those note marker post-its – they're a bit like stickers, but can be stuck to anything and then easily pulled off, plus you can make chains of them, etc.
  • Choose books that have interesting pictures so you can chat about what's in the picture and play 'find the X' as well as read the story.
  • Twice as many snacks as you think you'll need.

A busy book is a fantastic way to keep them entertained. I got one from Amazon that has a velcro jigsaw, zips, button & loop, etc. My 2 year old used it a lot on our last holiday.
