Toddler bedwetting

Hi, We have a DS who will be 4 in June. A few weeks ago he started flat out refusing to wear a pull up at night. He has been solidly potty trained during the day for nearly a year. I understand that night dryness is often hormonal and can’t really be “trained” at this age as such hence the pull ups.

BUT we are being woken every single night as he’s wet! We have a two week old newborn who was born premature and it is killing us to be sorting it out every night on top of night feeds and the amount of washing to be done.

Did anyone else have this? Are there any solutions people tried? Any nappy pants that feel like normal pants or combination of this and pads?

In an ideal world he would just go back to pull ups for a bit but he gets completely inconsolable if we suggest this, despite us reassuring him that it’s completely normal and he has done nothing wrong.

Yes. I put the nappy on him when he was asleep.

As someone who has been there and feel your pain, mine did it until he was 10. We tried various medications and had lots of scans/hospital appointments and it was just a hormonal thing that needed to kick in.

I would suggest for slightly less stress, put a sheet then a water proof sheet then another sheet and waterproof sheet, So when you change in the night you literally take off top sheet and waterproof layer and the bed is ready again without any fuss. Sometimes the top layer would get wet just have a layer of fresh ready to put on too.

we tried all the usual stuff, lift and wee when we went to bed. No drinks after 6. Lots of drinks to see if it helped him feel the urge more. Less of certain drinks/foods/chemicals. Sticker charts/pullups…We tried it all.

sending strength to get through this it might one day just click.

Huggies and Pampers do more grown up bed wetting pants that don’t look like baby nappies that could be an option! I would call them special night underwear.

Depending on the volume he produces you could look at reusable pants!

Thanks all. I really don’t want to give him a complex about it or worry him too much but something has to give!

There are reusable nappies for nighttime that feel more like pants (sort of padded pull ups). Honestly though, you don’t need more washing right now. I’d be a lot firmer about the nighttime nappies. 3 is still young to be dry at night and you likely have a couple more years of this at least.

Thanks for all your advice! We found some Spider-Man night nappies and made a big deal about throwing the “nappies” away and moving into big boy Spider-Man “bed pants” 😂 bless him he was so excited to put them on tonight so we’re hoping cautiously for more sleep tonight!

Good news OP, I was just coming on to suggest the Huggies dri-nites that look much more grown up than normal nappies and come in lots of cool designs. Sounds like that’s what you’ve found. My DS was in pull ups until he turned 6, so you might be in it for the long-haul!

Hope this works for you! My recently toilet trained DS (2.5) is getting upset about night nappies and we’ve begun calling them night time pants which has definitely helped.

We got to a point with our son when he was about 5 where he refused to wear nappies/night pants any more at night even though he wasn't dry. We sort of managed by lifting him and carrying him to the loo for a wee when we went to bed and eventually he was dry by about 6 and a half.
It's very individual - our other DS was dry at night at 2 (before he was completely potty trained in the day).
