GP or not? Dehydration

My almost 2 yo daughter has had an awful cold. She's over the worst of that but it seems like she's teetering on the edge of dehydration.

Two afternoons ago (Tuesday), she did her last pee about 2pm. Bedtime nappy was dry and she was sick from coughing shortly after she went to bed so brought up all her bedtime milk. Overnight nappy was dry (it's normally bursting by the morning). She did a pee soon after getting up.

Yesterday she had one bout of diarrhoea mid afternoon and hasn't peed since. She woke with coughing an hour or two ago and was sick again. Her nappy is still dry.

She's clearly wiped out but I'd expect that with the cold she has. I'm really pushing the fluids - water, juice and milk, and offering her as much fruit as she'll eat. Her appetite is up and down but she is eating.

Coughing in bed is a problem and often makes her sick - I think that's happened every day this week. Head of her mattress is elevated, there's a calpol plug in in her room and she gets cough syrup at bedtime.

Sorry for the long post but I'm not sure whether she needs to see a GP. Interested in perspectives.

She needs A and E. Pack a bag and go now.

Scrap that. Grab enough to get you there and go. Get someone else you bring the stuff.

Tell A and E you’re concerned about spesis.

As a nurse I agree, A&E. Don’t wait for the GP who will send you to A&E anyway.

cardpin · 29/01/2026 06:18

I agree, get her to A&E ASAP, in my experience you will be seen immediately.

You poor thing, you must both be exhausted.

Have just come back on as GP practice opens in 10 minutes but was not expecting these kinds of responses!

She's up now and has done a pee, she's in good form but still obviously wiped out. This is the pattern of how the last 48 hours have gone. I'm not concerned about sepsis, I was on Sunday but not now.

I just feel like she starts off OK each but dehydration gets worse as the day goes on

Have you tried really pushing more liquids? Offering a drink every 5 mins, giving juice, playing with tea cups if water. Syringing in 5 mls every 5 mins.

Either way a child that has not had a wee for over 18 hours needs medical attention.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 29/01/2026 08:35

She's got her juice and I keep reminding her to drink it but it's falling on deaf ears. She drank the milk from her cereal and had half a grape for breakfast 😐 Syringing fluids would be counter productive, she'd be so upset and she'd lose in tears anything that I managed to get into her.

I've phoned the GP surgery. They have a ridiculous appointment triage system where the receptionist takes details and I may or may not hear back before 6pm. Her tone of voice definitely sounded like they will be in touch soon but she can't say either way. I haven't had to get an appointment under this system before so it's hard to gauge.

If she seems well in herself, I’d be pushing liquids again and see how you get on for a bit. Lots of ice lollies. Really special treat things. Jelly, etc. And then make a decision what you do in a bit. She is weeing but not as much as usual from the sounds of it.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 29/01/2026 13:13

She's been seen by a GP and she's borderline for needing admission. GP is going to call me in the morning to see if she needs seen again. Got a prescription for dioralyte, which she hates, but GP has also suggested diluted apple juice which will apparently help to replenish her potassium.

Hopefully she's in the clear by the morning.

Thank you all for the advice.
