Bed time - curious with timings

Some background - my DS could possibly be neurodiverse but we can’t get an assessment. He struggles with ADHD and ASD traits, especially managing his emotions and organising himself.
He’s just turned 12 and what time he needs to go to bed is becoming a bit of a battle.

It generally takes him anything from half an hour to 1.5+ hours to do the things we ask him (wash, change into pjs, take medication, brush teeth etc). He puts off anything that is asked of him so we start asking him MUCH earlier to get ready than the time we expect him to go to sleep. He is asked not to watch tv too late but can read for as long as he likes and he often falls asleep reading which I don’t mind at all.
I keep being told he’s the only one at school who doesn’t have to go to bed before 11pm.
Obviously weekends are a bit more relaxed and I’m not quite so fussed if he goes to bed later.
Does anyone else’s children take this long to get ready for bed?
What time do your 12 year olds go to bed?

And I also work at a school with boarders. Year 7s are in dorms at 8.30pm with lights out at 8.45pm.

11yo DS is asd, goes up at 8pm and in bed at 9pm. Weekdays, weekends, holidays always the same, its his routine.

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/01/2026 07:25

Generally before 9 (except after Rugby and Scouts, as we are late home.. but its home, supper, bed)

My about to turn 13 year old is usually in her room between 9:30-10pm. She has sports training til 9pm 3 days a week, so those nights she needs to come home, eat something, shower and get to bed, so closer to 10pm.

I think she probably doesn’t fall asleep until closer to 11pm, but I’m in bed by 9:30pm so there is definitely no staying up til 11pm intentionally. They need a lot of sleep at this age and that’s a very late bedtime if that’s only the time he is just settling into his room.

I should add that these times don’t change massively on the weekends or holidays. I go to bed the same time every day and get up same time so I pretty much keep dc on same schedule except for special occasions, like staying up to watch a Christmas film or a wedding, or sleepover.

Mine used to read in bed till 9pm. I would turn out the lights and switch the WiFi off

My 13 year old 9.30 on a school night 11.30 on a weekend or holiday

Thank you. Seems to be that he’s not the only child in the country not allowed to be awake until after 11pm! 😊
