I want to use real nappies from the get go with this baby. How many will I realistically need?

I use real nappies with DD, but started around eight weeks old.

this time around I want to use them from the off but am concerned about having a decent amount, as DD was getting through up to 16 dispos a day in the early weeks.

I've just bought some new fluff to add to my stash and wanted to run the numbers by all the very wise real nappy MNers out there.

I have got:

11 newborn bimbles
4 diddy diapers
3 newborn pockets (nature babies, happy heiny's and an unknown)

add to this

4 small bumhuggers
1 size 1 Tots unbleached cotton terry
5 size 1 little lambs
1 small fuzzi bunz

all of which will be a little bulky on a newborn but will be OK for nighttime/emergency use I think.

I've also got one rikki wrap, two small nature babies wraps that popper down v small, and three proraps that are on their last legs but are OK for a couple of hours single use (the leg bindings seem to get very wet very quickly)

Was thinking all I'll need is maybe another couple of wraps and I'll be all set.

or do I need some more newborn nappies? will 18 be enough to see me for a couple of days?

baby due in November so I will probably use a combination of radiators/tumble drier for drying purposes.

TIA...daisy x

I've been getting my stash together as well, here's what I've got:

24 newborn prefolds
36 infant prefolds
12 muslins

6 newborn wraps (4 cotn wraps, 2 imse vimse)
6 small wraps (4 bummis, 2 imse vimse)
2 small wool soakers

Why not get some terries, muslins or prefolds if you think you'll need more? I'm in the minority but I lurve prefolds, you can fold them down to fit, they wash well and dry quickly, you can use them for boosters/burp cloths/changing pads/etc and they are cheap.

It'll be my first time using cloth with a newborn too so I'll be very interested in what others have to say!

PS DD was teeny tiny with a small bum so I did invest in newborn wraps for this one.

agree with JoyS. i used muslins on dd for the first 3 months. cheap, easy, quick to wash and dry. can't go wrong really.

I've got half a dozen terry squares as well, whihc I suppose would be good for emergencies. I've never tried prefolds, but they don't get the best write up so I steered clear.

We also have a huge stash of microfibre boosters for DDs pocket nappies which could be called into use with a wrap if the need arose.

I just love the cuteness of the newborn nappies though

and we have a fair few muslins kicking around as well.

I used 24 terries with my newborn and this meant washing every 2 or 3 days which was fine, so I'd say you are well and truly set!

I have 20 Sandy's Extra Small for DS and I think 5 wraps?

I wash every other day.

Have 15 sandy's for DD who is 2 years.

Can you imagine the amount of disposables we would use? Ugh - and our rubbish is collected every 2 weeks!!!

lackaDAISYcal · 13/06/2008 20:00

I am slightly disgusted by the amount of dispos we discarded with DD. Our bin was half filled with nappies by the end of the week.

We still use dispos part time with her, due to ongoing nasty nappy rash/exzema issues, but I'm determined that DC3 will be a full time clothie.

I think I'll stick with what I have and supplement with a few more terries if need be (I love all the different folds), and I may get a few more wraps, although I think I have two coming from a friend who is loaning me the Little Lambs.

DH will be relieved

I recommend Little Lambs. They fit well and are one of the cheapest out there.

But I agree you need about 20 - 25 for newborns, as you will get through 10 a day. That means washing every other day, but once DS was bigger we moved to every 3 days washing and only needed about 18 nappies.

Hope that helps.

Be warned once you have used real nappies, you do become a bit evangelical about it, so you might want to warn your friends

PortAndLemon · 13/06/2008 20:11

I had 20 with DS from birth and wished I had another few, so around 24-25.

lackaDAISYcal · 13/06/2008 20:14

We already use cloth nappyvalley and I have evangelised and converted one of my friends...who is evangelising in turn

I want to start my own advisory/selling business too, but that was the plan before I got pregnant again. Not sure about starting a new business with a new baby on the way and the economic climate the way it is at the minute.

love little lambs; had a few with DD that I sold to a friend who is in turn lending them back to me!
