Sixth form issues

hi all my son moved to a very academic sixth form a train ride away (his choice) and at first seemed pretty happy. Recently he has been saying he hates it, has no friends and can’t say anything positive about it. I habe asked to speak to the head of sixth form but I wonder if I should also be looking at moving him or if anyone has been able to do that at this stage? I am really unsure what options there are but it’s hard to think of him miserable for another 18 montbs

That must be difficult for all of you. What were his reasons for wanting to choose a Sixth Form away from home?

Also sorry that you’re not getting many replies. Have you thought of asking MNHQ to move this over to the Teenage Section? You’ll probably get more responses in there.

He's done about 1/3 of the courses (because year 13 is shorter) so it's unlikely he'd be able to change now unless you strike exceedingly lucky (same subjects, same exam boards, covering course in same order, same stage of coursework/portfolio if relevant).

You are looking at a re-start of year 12 in September realistically.

In the meantime you can work with the HOY to see if things can be improved socially.

I'd get this moved to Further Education.

Can he separate the issues?
Is it lack of friends
Or travel
Or the courses themselves?

Transferring could be hard due to syllabuses and order of teaching, so as others have said a restart would be more likely.

But why would the issues not just move with him?
