Should I wake my baby for last feed of the day?

So my baby is 10 weeks (11 on Monday) and we normally give 6 x 5oz bottles per day.

He is growing well and tracking on his growth curve.

He has started to sleep for 8 hours at night, meaning he isn’t getting his first bottle until around 7:30am.
I then feed him every 3/3.5 hours in the day so then 10:30am, 1.30am ish 5pm and 8pm ish, then 11:30pm.

We normally go to bed around 9pm with him and he settles and falls to sleep pretty quickly, however we are waking him for his last feed at 11:30pm. Are we doing the right thing? I feel we shouldn’t wake him, but my partner says if we didn’t, we’d be back to feeding around 4:30am whereas currently it’s 7:30am.

this is my first baby and I see so much conflicting advice on what to do and sleep training etc it’s really worrying me we are doing something wrong!

I'd be concerned at a 10 week old sleeping 8 hours solid.

Doctor and Health Vistor all perfectly happy with it

Of course a 10 week old baby can sleep 8 hours, that's fine!

If they are thriving and putting on weight then that's fine.

I'd say that what you are doing sounds perfect. I think a "dream sleep" at 23:30pm is good.
You run the risk of them waking 4:30/5:30 and then not going back to sleep otherwise.

I did the same with both of mine and then when it was the right time we gradually reduced the 23:00 feed down until it naturally stopped.

Why? Why would you be "concerned"?

IAteAllTheCake · 23/01/2026 08:57

I agree with pp’s suggestion. Try a dream feed at 23:30. We used to do it with all 3 of ours and worked wonderfully.

And 10 week olds can and do sleep 8 hours - I’ve never before heard that it’s a concern. Enjoy it while you can because it might not last!!

I did similar (woke them at 1130pm) until they were 16 weeks then stopped and they just slept the 12 hours through.

If you are getting a good block of sleep yourself, don’t change a single thing about what you are doing. The baby will change their habits soon enough, as babies do, and you can drop the dream feed then.
It’s normal for a 10 week old to sleep 8 hour blocks, one of my bf babies did it (for exactly two weeks).

What would be better for your sleep schedule? Personally, I think I’d struggle with going to bed at 9pm and then having to wake at 11:30pm. I’d much rather wake at 3/4am when most of us wake naturally for a bit anyway, need a wee, drink, etc. I’d be inclined to do a dream feed then if I was up. Or feed at 4:30am and maybe get a bit of a lie in.

SleafordSods · 23/01/2026 16:58

Does he finish his bottles during the day @JavaGreen1998? If he is draining them you could try going up an ounce?

Bitzee · 23/01/2026 17:37

Try the dream feed. That way you can do it your way (not wake baby) and your partners way (avoiding an early hours wake). We did it until weaning was established and it worked great. But we did it at like 10pm as didn’t fancy staying up to 11.30 every night!

Total nonsense.

OP, is 30oz of formula a day is on the upper end of the scale for a 10 week old. If they didn't take that last feed they'd still be well within healthy range of milk intake, if that is your concern.
