What kind of steriliser should I buy?

Hello! I realise this is a basic question, but I've become so addicted to Mumsnet that I can't make decisions by myself any more.

Anyway, DS2 is 4 months old and our old steriliser (Avent) has broken. I don't know if we'll have more children. (This might be relevent to your advice.) (Other things you might need to factor in are: we're skint, I'm a Taurus and my favourite colour is blue.) Should I...

a) Buy a new one with my Boots Advantage Card points?

b) Use Milton sterilising solution instead?

c) Just boil the bottles every night? If so, how long do you have to boil them for till they're sterile?

Any tips/advice would be fab. Thanks!

We had a Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser that was pretty good.

Its red 'on' light flashes on and off, and the water isn't getting boiled away. I think it's knackered.

I'm too scared to rely only on dishwasher, cos of the new SIDS theory about bacteria!

If you've got a microwave then I've got an Avent microwave one sitting on top of the upboard you can have. The microwave ones are pretty light to post.

At 4 months, you'll be OK washing them in the hottest water you can stand and letting them air dry....or in the dishwasher if you have one.

What new SIDS stuff about bacteria? I've not seen that.

sophiewd · 13/06/2008 14:00

Just stick them in the dishwasher.

BEAUTlFUL · 13/06/2008 14:32

Bramshott, that would be wonderful. Thank you! I have CAT-ed you. Thanks so much.

SIDS and bacteria

yes but the point was that both of the bacteria that may be linked are 'normal flora' ie found up your nose / on your skin or in your digestive tract anyway, however hard you sterilise.
My login is bust so I can't access the whole Lancet article.

lackaDAISYcal · 13/06/2008 20:19

agree Mrs B; from my understanding of the article it was existing body bacteria, not that from improperly cleaned feeding utensils.
