This habit of my ds's doesn,t seem right and its driving me mad

Hi
My ds has had this habit since he was 6 months old and I am getting worried that at 7 he doesn,t appear to be growing out of it.

The problem is that he is always twirling my hair and even his dads given the opportunity, at the same time he is constantly sucking his tongue and the noise when he does that is really loud.

The only time he stops is when he is playing.
He still comes into our bed by about 5.00am each morning and he lies next to me fiddling with my hair, and sucking his tongue, and the noise drives me mad.
Is this normal behaviour I mean for gods sake when we went swimming instead of getting on and drying himself off, and getting dressed, he stood there and tried to play with my wet hair and suck his tongue until I scolded him for it.
H e has on the odd occasion followed me to twiddle my hair.
I am also worried about his teeth as the dentist said he could mishspe them with the tongue sucking, and he may need to wear a plate to prevent him sucking his tongue.
What on earth can I do to get him out of it.

My Dh is 31 and still sucks his tounge when he's tired or ill.
Its a comfort thing and he doesn't even realise he's doing it, luckily he doesn't make a noise and I hope think I'm the only one who can tell he's doing it.

His teeth are perfectly straight so its never caused him any dental problems.

I know he has done it at school as well and that makes me cringe.
His teacher said in a jokey way that sometimes he switches off and he will be sitting there with his tongue hanging out, and she will have to shout his name to get his attention.
His mates were copying each other habits the once and of course they were doing the tongue sucking as thats my ds's.
Luckily I don't think he has attempted the hair twirling at school thank god.
He saves that torturous regime for me.

Ugh! The tongue-sucking is just the sort of noise that would drive me mad so totally sympathise. Probably an alternative to thumb-sucking or paccy-sucking.

As for your ds' love of your hair, my closest friend suffered the same thing until recently when her ds finally stopped. But she suffered, almost to the point of tears! She seriously considered chopping her hair off but compromised by plaiting it.

So, nothing abnormal - just annoying & i'm sure he'll grow out of it. But maybe ask your gp for advice? good luck

Can your tie your hair back tightly so that he cannot twiddle? Or cut it very short?

lostittoday · 13/06/2008 11:43

The noise is horrendous at times and it really irritates me.
As for the hair twirling it really hurts sometimes.
He has even sat behind me on the sofa and tried to twirl my hair around his toes.

artichokes I could never chop my hair off.
He would still play with it tied back, he would pull strands out piece by piece.

I have moved away from him so many times and then he gets very upset.
I suppose I feel this behaviour isn,t right because it seems immature for a 7 year old.

Never twiddled anyone elses hair but I still have a hair twirling habit, either when tired or nervous, so I always ensure I tie it back for meetings/interviews etc.

The tongue thing could cause dental problems.

girlywhirly · 13/06/2008 16:54

What about getting him a small hairpiece to twiddle? And say that your hair is out of bounds?

My DH still twiddles his own hair in his 50's. He says he's got to make the most of it before he loses it all to baldness! He was also a lifelong nailbiter, but recently I commented that I hadn't seen him do that for some time. He said he hadn't. When I asked him when he'd stopped, he replied "when I married you' (6 yrs ago!) AAAHHH.

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 16:55

I still hair twiddle but don't suck tongue.

I'm 41.

Does it have to be hair? I have a weird habit of "clicking" cotton materials and Im 24! It drives me hubby mad.
Would ribbons work for him?
