Bumgenius - nappy cream

I'm thinking of making the switch to reusables and like the look of Bumgenius nappies. However, I have read that you shouldn't use any nappy rash cream, as it affects the fabric.

Is this true and does anyone have experience of using Bumgenius nappies with no cream?

I've been using disposables up to now and guess I've just been used to using cream at every change.

Would also be grateful for any feedback or advice about Bumgenius nappies.

Thanks everyone!

you can mostly get away with thinner water based or veg oil based creams, I have always used the earth friendly baby calendula daily care cream uneventfully with cloth nappies. The ones that tend to cause problems are the zinc based ones or ones with mineral oils in as they don't wash out at all well.

I use Tots and use a disposable liner which if I have to use sudocream or something then it just sits on that. You are not supposed to put too much on anyway.

I'm surprised that you use cream at every change. Is there a reason for that or just habit ?

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

I guess I have been using cream at each change out of habit, as that's what the health visitor advised when DS was born. He's only had a touch of nappy rash once, which cleared up very quickly with Bepanthen. I use a thin layer of Bepanthen at each change as the manufacturer recommends, but would definitely like to hear what you all do. Do you suggest just using cream when/if nappy rash occurs?

yes satsuma I would say exactly that - you only need cream if there is any nappy rash. Even then you can sometimes get rid of the rash just by leaving the nappy off for a while so that your little one's bum is aired, and perhaps putting on something like cornflour to help it dry out.

If the nappy rash needed anything more, I used to like the gel from the Active Birth Centre (but it was quite expensive) or Kamillosan.

Thanks mummypig!

I can't believe I've been getting it wrong for so long and using cream when I shouldn't have...

Anyway, will try with no cream and see what happens.

Hi Satsuma1

I use Bumgenius and I absolutely love them!!! I'm a big fan of pockets anyway, and these are certainly one of the best . I don't use cream unless my baby's bot is looking a little red which only ever happens if I haven't realised that he's pooed and therefore haven't changed him quick enough, so not very often! I use a fleece liner and so the cream doesn't end up touching the Bumgenius, when I do use cream.

I have used the BG overnight (12 hours) and it hasn't leaked and no redness on baby's bot - they really are fab!

here here to telly addict. I also use sudocrem evry now and then when bum sore and they still absorb .

That's great, thanks tellyaddict & lulalullabye.

I've ordered one Bumgenius nappy to try and DS is currently cream free!
