SMA Baby Milk Recall - Help!

MumOfBoys1214 · 14/01/2026 12:30

So my 8 month baby has been on SMA Stage 1 since birth. HV says we stay on stage 1 until 12months - no need to move to stage 2, due to allergies/sensitivities etc. Baby currently has no allergies or sensitivities and is weaning well. However, due to the recall notice, his milk is affected. I have half a tin left and he is taking 22oz a day so it’s going to run out by the weekend. I cannot seem to get any unaffected milk as everywhere is out of stock due to the recall notice. What am I best doing? Do I move to stage 2 as this is unaffected - although, it’s early turn HV states, or so I begin to switch brands? If switching brands, which brand is most similar?

What has every one else that has been affected done?

TIA.

You mean he is over his dairy allergy completely? He can take cow's milk no problem? Then I'd switch formula, no reason to be on the horrible SMA (I say that as another mum with a CMPA baby! Mine has not outgrown it yet, he's 17 months).

He’s never had any dairy allergies, it’s just what the Health Visitor recommended for all babies that they stay on stage 1 for 12months and don’t move to stage too. I breastfed initially and moved him around 2months old. He’s never had normal cows milk yet.

Does your child have an allergy or is the HV saying not to change brands because it’s more likely to cause an allergy? There is no evidence to suggest that. It’s recommended not to change brands because it can cause tummy upsets but your child is also having a range of food so is used to eating different things and stage 2 milks are known to cause digestive issues. I would move to a stage 1 milk in anothet brand.

No, HV hasn’t said to not change brands, she’s said not to move to stage 2 for all babies due to no digestive issues like you said. So I planned to stay on stage 1 but I can’t get it. So you recommend just changing formula brand?

Yes, I don’t think you have another option. A stage 1 milk is more suitable than a stage 2 milk.

It is absolutley fine to change brand it might constipate him but generally it is fine.

Why can't you change brands? Has the hv not offered any alternatives considering the recall

We’ve had this issue although my LO is only 4 months and we had a nightmare initially finding a brand that didn’t upset her stomach. In the end, we’ve had to switch her onto Aldi own brand and so far she’s been alright apart from needing more than she would on the SMA (it doesn’t seem to fill her up as much) but was one of the only options we hadn’t tried initially!

There’s nothing much between stage 1 and 2 the biggest difference is they can market and advertise stage 2 but can’t stage 1 I think your HV is talking rubbish!
