Cot Bumper thoughts?

Harry26 · 12/01/2026 07:50

My little one pushes her dummies out of her cot every night and wakes up crying looking for them so I have to go in and move the cot to fish out the dummies. I am thinking of getting a cot bumper but I know they are not recommended. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or any other solutions please? TIA

They’re not safe.

Get some of that soft mesh stuff that’s breathable, that’s what we did. You tie it loosely around the cot as you would a bumper but it lets air through the mesh.

Even the mesh isn’t safe. Just don’t. It’s really not worth the risk.
I would buy more dummies (we used to put 10 in bed every night), sneak back in before you go to bed yourself to replace any that have fallen out and if that still doesn’t help use a travel cot until this phase is over.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 12/01/2026 08:07

Don’t get any sort of bumper - even mesh not safe as it’s still a strangulation risk.

Devilsmommy · 12/01/2026 08:08

Really short dummy clip. That's how I got around it. Has to be a short one though because obviously the long ones are strangulation risks

Hegharty · 12/01/2026 08:10

I would put lots in the cot so they can find one.

BeenChangedForGood · 13/01/2026 08:12

Just one of those things unfortunately. I’m sure every parent with kids that take a dummy has been through that stage.
Put lots in the cot. I used to get the MAM glow in the dark nighttime ones so they were easier to spot.

Jfmamjjason2 · 13/01/2026 08:13

Spare dummy’s next to cot stops night time searching.

oustedbymymate · 13/01/2026 08:14

They aren’t safe. Buy more dummies. We used to start with 5 in the cot and then add more before we went to bed.

KnickerlessParsons · 13/01/2026 08:17

Teach her to sleep without a dummy??

CotBedMug · 13/01/2026 08:17

The stings are the problem, if you can find one without strings it ms probably less of a risk.

Most people I know just put a lot of dummies in the cot. Or have one of those teddies that you can attach the dummy to, makes it much easier for baby to find and hold themselves.

mindutopia · 13/01/2026 10:48

I would just get rid of the dummies (once she gets used to not having them it will be no big deal, you’ll have to do it eventually, why not now?) or move her cot into your room so you are next to her and don’t have to get up to hand them back.

How old is your LO? I bought some ‘breathable’ bumpers (I’ll put a link below) for my son as he’s an active sleeper and kept bumping his head on the cot bars in the night; I was more concerned about him getting concussion more than suffocating! I didn’t put them on until he was just over a year old, and I will also add a slight disclaimer that we have a breathing monitor mat under his mattress too - I don’t think I would’ve dared do it without that, but I am a worrier!

Depends on the age of the OPs child.

Dummies are recommended for SIDs prevention and based on the behaviours outlined here I'd guess they're still under a year old, so they may not want to stop them yet.

If they're over a year then maybe time to attempt weaning off them.

No bumper is safe. Use multiple dummies or a dummy clip.

User415373 · 14/01/2026 11:04

We tied dummies onto the corners of comforters and muslins. Made it easier for baby to find and less likely to fall out. Also just chuck in loads of extra dummies. Not worth the bumper risk, even the mesh ones (especially tied loosely - baby could get neck stuck under).
