5-year-old is driving me mad with his singing

This is (sort of) light-hearted because I love my kid to bits, but since the end of November he has sung Jingle Bells every day, multiple times a day, and I simply cannot take it any more.

We’re talking near-constant singing, from morning to night.

I have tried ignoring it, (light) consequences, and just reminding him that it’s annoying, but to no avail.

What are your strategies for this type of repetitive behaviour (common in small children I know!)?

Not a clue what to do about it, my LO has a lovely little singing voice but all day every day is… grating. So I am here in solidarity with you!

The only things I can say have helped are encouraging other songs, putting lots of music on (that is not twinkle twinkle little star, hop little bunnies and the Spanish version of incy wincy spider) and joining in and then moving the singing on to practicing numbers or months of the year or something (maybe more like two times tables or something at that age).

We had away in a manger EVERY DAY for 2 years at bed time. It was torture.

Oh my god, I do this, I sing the same song on repeat whilst I’m cooking/cleaning, it drives my DH mad. Or just one line of the song, again and again. Current song is Mad World by Tears for Fears. I don’t really know I’m doing it, but it tends to be if my hands are occupied but my brain isn’t, I think!

I have a daughter that has been singing constantly since she could make a noise. Right now she is lying in her bed singing. She had her own theme tune that she made up and sang on repeat for years. I miss that little tune and me and my husband sometimes randomly start singing it Grin She sings Christmas songs all year round too.

Join in. Louder, more dramatic and off key. Every time. Grin

Flashback to my then 2.5yo shouting hakunahhhhh Mattattaaaaaaa over and over again all day everyday. I remember at the time thinking it would never end and now I've realized I never even noticed it stop!

Anyway, solidarity. Would it help to play a playlist of DCs favourite songs on Spotify so they just sing along to that instead?

Teach him the pogues fairy tale of New York. At least it will be more entertaining

HelpMeUnpickThis · 09/01/2026 23:02

Why do they fixate on Christmas songs?! 🤯🤯🤯

Greatest Showman sdtrack saved my life in the end - bearable.

My DS insisted on singing his school reading book to the tune of Ding Dong Merrily On High this week. I feel your pain.

This is the support group I require! 😂😂 My five year old is constantly either singing or talking. I don’t think he understands that he has the ability to be quiet.

He’s starting Stagecoach classes next week and we’re hoping this will help direct his energy 😅

mumofboysinlondon · 10/01/2026 07:31

Sorry for all your singing kids but also, this is making me feel so much better 😂

I am going to try redirection to other songs, although I suppose that comes with it's own risks!
