How to get rid of wee smell from shoes?

My younger son is going through potty training and unfortunately he’s had an accident yesterday, soaked his trousers and shoes.
I am really trying to get rid of urine smell but nothing is working. The smell is awful.

Anything I can try that works?
im reluctant to buy new pair as he may do the same thing but I can’t let him walk smelling of wee.

Washing machine? Depending on what kind of shoes they are.

Those are some cheap black shoes from Tesco (he uses them for nursery). I’ve tried washing machine and didn’t get rid of the smell. Which urine eliminator spray is best? The only ones I see are for cats or dogs.

Cover them in white vinegar and then let dry

PearAndGingerCake · 07/01/2026 21:13

Google says equal parts white vinegar and water then baking powder to absorb

KindOpalBear · 07/01/2026 21:20

Thank you. I will give it a go.
has anyone actually done this with success?

I mean if they're cheap black shoes then just get him some more but prob get him a couple of pairs of machine washable ones

From personal experience vinegar makes it smell worst yes the pet ones work. They have enzymes that break down the smell of urine works for both animal and human pee. Also good for sick in the car ,i used envii

soak In sink with baking soda. Wash again in machine. Then leave to fully dry out for several days. It never goes 100% but we have pulled some back from the depths of hell to pretty perfect, so I promise it is possible

Next and Clarks do machine washable footwear for nursery age- more expensive than Tesco but may work out cheaper in the long run- especially if you look in the sales.

If it were summer I’d suggest crocs or sandals but even the fluffy lined crocs may end up smelling- although on saying that it may wash out better? Not ideal for outdoors though. Could he have some nursery slippers so they can be thrown in the wash or is that too much faff?

You can get enzyme cleaner which breaks down the molecules in urine. I’d try the pet one first as suggested above as that might be for pet urine and work okay. If not enzyme cleaner on Amazon
