Should I officially start potty training?

My DD is 2 this week, and she has started announcing "Nappy Change" quite urgently just before a wee or a poo comes out. It took us a while to realise she was feeling the urge to wee as well as poo, but yesterday she told us she needed a nappy change, I checked for a poo, as there was none I suggested using the potty, and then she sat on it and di a wee. She was so pleased, got lots of praise singing and dancing etc. What should we do now? Try and officially train her? If so, what do we do? Does poo get sorted after wee, or the other way round? What have other people done, is this too early? She normally does a poo as soon as she wakes, another one in the middle of the day and one at dinner time, and I have no idea when she normally wees.

Thanks in advance

hey woollymummy, many congrats on 1st wee in potty! (dd that is, not you!) my dd is 19 months and telling me poo poo just before she goes in her nappy but i think poo poo means wee wee too! think its all signs but i am gonna hang on in till she is two in october. i think poo does get sorted after wee, and going through the night dry starts a lot later around 3 yrs of age. also if she is staying dry for long periods during the day this is a good sign too.

Your DD certainly sounds as though she knows she is about to wee/poo before it happens, and with time for you to help her. If you don't feel she's ready for intensive training, why not do potty practice, where you put her on the potty at regular times throughout the day and put her nappy on between times? You could pot her on waking, before or after meals and mid morning/afternoon, before bath and last thing before bed. It becomes routine, and if you get a few poos, so much the better. When she is well used to this, regularly using the pot with dry nappy in between, and asking to use the potty at other times I think you could go cold turkey and have her in just normal pants. Or in the warm weather, no pants and a potty close by so that she can put herself on it!! You might find that DD decides she doesn't want to wear nappies any more and effectively trains herself.

I think this is a great opportunity to train her, she is willing to sit on the potty, and pleased with her success, always a good start. Accept that there will be accidents, but make light of them, jst gently remind to try and use the potty next time. Take her to buy some pretty knickers as an incentive. Don't worry about night training, this is a separate issue and can only be accomplished when the child is physically ready. Good luck!!

thats great, my little treasure tells me after the event. when we give her nappy free time before bed time, she will happily sit on the potty but gets quite distressed if she does anything in it, instead she like to squat on the floor and do a peepee, but is happy to do a perform in a potty at nursery or at the childminders.

any suggestions would be welcome on how I get her to use the potty in the house, we've tried the praise but to no avail.
