10 week old crying in pain and sucking hands all the time? Too early for teeth?

What is the earliest you have had teeth appear? Our older son was around 15 weeks so not out of the question.

Suggestions appreciated on what else it could be

My son did get teeth early, I can't recall if 10 weeks though. He also had silent reflux which made him cry ALOT and suck hands as a form of soothing as he had a sore throat from the acid rising and him swallowing it again.

I think teeth can be painful when moving down so it can occur in advance of them appearing.

@NewYearsPudding is it just a case of calpol? Or reckon Ashtons powders would help?

I forgot between my first and second but my 6month old has been "teething" since about 9/10 weeks. No teeth yet, but just sucking and dribbling and chewing and crying!

We now have one very red cheek and he has been fussy and upset all day. I can't see anything at the front but thought his guns felt hard/thinner/sharper edge midway back like something was coming there?

My DD had her first tooth at 11weeks. 4 by 16 weeks. But it was a complete surprise as no usual symptoms. To be honest she cried almost non stop for the first 6 months of her life anyway!

DS first tooth was around 2 months!

Could it be hunger ? I've had 4 children and none of them had teething pain . I just wondered about the hand sucking , is he just a hungry baby .

Dollybantree · 31/12/2025 21:26

He sounds hungry - have you tried a dummy?

Imgoingoutthefrontdoorwithgerry · 31/12/2025 21:34

I was going to suggest hungry. My son was born 9lb 11oz. Around 10 weeks was trying to eat his hands. Doctor said he was teething. I didn’t think so tbh. At 4 months I couldn’t take anymore, the poor thing was hungry so I tried him on a 4+ month jar food (yes, I know I was supposed to wait until 6 months), just the very small one at dinner time before having his bedtime milk. OMG! He slept through the night (first time!) and stopped eating his hands. So the next evening I did the same and never looked back.

Teeth came through when he was 1.

He’s 17 and 6ft 4” now! 😂 And still loves a lot of food. Slim though.

What was your baby’s birth weight?

Same here.

The advice back then was to start them on puréed food at 4 months - some even started at three. My ds was exactly the same, by four months the dummy wouldn’t cut it and he had to start on food!

Is he breast fed OP? You could try topping him up with formula (the richer one) if you don’t want to start weaning just yet.

My son cut his first tooth at 12 weeks! I remember going to the pharmacy around the 10 weeks ish mark asking what I could give him for teething and they quite literally laughed in my face and told me he wasn’t teething 🫣
