I have 2 DD's aged 2.5 and 1.5 during the day i give mi wadi suger free juice, milk, Tea for DD1 as she loves it and i try water. Both never drink fizzy drinks. I am wondering is the mi-wadi bad for them as my DS said there is something in it that is bad for them.

I am wondering what other mums give there kids????

What is mi-wadi?

Not sure about tea regularly for a 2.5year old. Sips of mine sure but not a cup to themselves?

DS drinks mostly water, sometimes milk and sometimes watered down juice. If he is having a "special" drink he gets sparkling water.

NotABanana · 11/06/2008 16:48

Under 5s shouldn't have tea.

Mine have milk or water and very occasionally watered down fresh juice.

ScoobyDoo · 11/06/2008 16:49

Dd is 2.4 & has milk or water, sometimes she has fresh juice apple or orange but i water it down.

Ds 5.9 mostly has water & also has fresh juice watered down. ds does not like to drink milk.

dd1 who is 4.11yrs has fruit juice for breakfast, normally berry or apple and water or milk for rest of day

dd2 who is 2 only ever has water

bythepowerofgreyskull · 11/06/2008 16:53

mine are both under 5
they have water, milk, orange juice, apple juice, ribena, peach high juice, lemon highjuice, they are all diluted the cordials are very diluted.
they sometimes taste my tea but never more than a sip or two same with coffee, it isn't offered to them as a drink. iykwim

Mi-widi is a squash juice drink.. Both only get 5-6oz of juice or less, then its milk which they will take or water which both dont like but will have it if there thirsty.. As for DD1 drinking whole cups is a no no, she might get a small cup which is bout 3oz of weak tea.. She wants to do what daddy does..

my mindees get mostly water or milk. I try and avoid ribena and juices because of the acid content and the sugar content. some of the parents are a bit funny about e numbers and sweetners so i don't give them fruit shoots or 'sugar free' drinks either. would never give them fizzy drinks or tea because of the caffeine in it. i will do the sane with my own children. diluted fruit juice is fine though, but not all of the time due to the acid content.

DragonsEye · 11/06/2008 17:08

those juice drinks are full of shite. mi wadi contains sodium benzoate (in fairly high quantities) which when mixed with vit c in soft drinks becomes carcinogenic. I guess thats what your dh is talking about.

The sugar free ones are the worst imo, surely plain old sugar is better than all those artificial sweetners?

Mainly mine drink water or real fruit juice, i also buy organic blackcurrant squash which doesnt seem to have a list of chemicals listed as ingrediants.

iamdingdong · 11/06/2008 17:10

fresh juice/water/milk at breakfast time, water the rest of the time, lemonade occasionally

ellideb · 11/06/2008 17:10

agree with dragonseys about the sweetners v sugar

babytime · 11/06/2008 17:14

Mainly water, if I can afford it then innocent smoothies or a cup of milk.

mine are 5 and 2.

I give them juice a few times a week but they eat lots of fruit and it tends to upset dd2's tummy.

if i buy squash I buy the natural ones with pure ingrediants. they dont taste as nice but normal ones have too much rubbish in them.

i need to buy a juicer because they both love the raw juice from wagamamas, think it carrot, orange and apple.

dandycandyjellybean · 11/06/2008 17:29

my 2.7 ds loves tea, and has done since he was old enough to nick some from dad. it is about an inch of very weak tea with loads of milk; can't see the harm myself. I know it's supposed to stop them absorbing vits if you give it with food, so don't do that apart from the occasional cuppa with his toast of a morning. But most of the time he has water, very very watered down fruit juice (teeth) or 'mummys fizzy' which is basically a 2lt bottle of sparkling water with about 1/2 inch of pink grapefruit high juice added....oh and a sip of daddy's beer of course, or sticks his finger in dh's hip flask!

francagoestohollywood · 11/06/2008 17:29

Mine are 4 and nearly 6 and their main drink is water. Dd has refused to drink milk for months now.
Ds occasionally drinks a (small) cup of weak tea with milk.
When I'm bothered I squash some oranges and they'll drink that.
Ds begs for coke at parties.

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:30

Normally squash.
They both have a home made smoothie every morning though much cheaper than innocent smoothies, DP started having them as part of his daily routine and the DC's like them with more orange juice, so not as thick.

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:31

Oh, they have milk every night before bed as well, only they won't drink plain milk so they have a dash of crusha in it.

So smoothie for breakfast, water at school for DD, but squash for DS at home, squash the rest of the day and crusha+milk before bed.

EachPeachPearMum · 11/06/2008 17:32

My dd (2.4) has milk or water. Occasionally she has apple juice (but, about once a month 100ml) and she sometimes has cooled peppermint tea, which she loves.
Is it only normal (black) tea which leaches iron?

ellideb · 11/06/2008 17:45

Victoriansqualor, that nightcap your giving them is the worst thing you can do for their teeth as sugar is harshest on there teeth at nightime when there is no saliva being produced to wash it away. squash throughout the day is also very harmful for young ones teeth. its not the amount you give them, its the frequency, teeth can only handle 3-4 acid attacks a day.

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:46

They brush their teeth after elliedb, well not straight away, about half hour after, but I'm sure that half hour won't be too much of a problem.

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:48

That's half an hour after their crusha, not squash.

ellideb · 11/06/2008 17:52

you'd be better off giving them a lump of cheese straight after to neutralise the acid as you should avoid brushing your teeth for an hour after eating anything sweet otherwise you are just wearing away the softened enamel

VictorianSqualor · 11/06/2008 17:55

Does it help they eat biscuits with it

ComeOVeneer · 11/06/2008 17:59

Only need to wait 20 minutes after to brush teeth.

ellideb · 11/06/2008 17:59

GO TO YOUR ROOM!

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 11/06/2008 17:59

Ellideb - I worry about dd2s teeth as she doesn't like cheese. Is there anything else I can do?

lazarou · 11/06/2008 17:59

Just water and milk
