Cloth nappies and body suits etc - first timer question

Baby not due till October, but starting to think about buying some basics as I have just had 20 week scan.

I intend to use cloth nappies and looking at body suits today in M&S/Mothercare there does not seem to be much room in there for a nappy, let alone a cloth one.

So, is this a stupid first timer question, but do these standard body suits fit over a cloth nappy?

depends on the make - some are roomier than others. If in doubt, just get the next size up.

You can get clothes specially made for cloth - direct people who want to buy you presents to Frugi, especially the kimono vests. Or, if you're buying them yourself, [[http://www.tinkertogs.co.uk/ Tinkertogs are cheaper and extremely good quality, esp the sleepsuits.
Petit Bateau vests are for some reason really long in the body so are handy if you have a skinnymalink so the next size up doesn't 'bag' round the top and shoulders.

Or you can just get some vest extenders that give normal ones extra room in the crotch. Available from all the nappy sellers

you can buy vest extenders or vests without poppers at all. I ended up getting "boys" sleeveless bodysuits so you could go up a size without them being too big across the shoulders.

Washersaurus · 11/06/2008 14:30

Just buy them a size bigger - skip newborn sizes.

Tesco's sizes are usually larger too

Thanks that's really useful advice. I might go and make my first baby purchase now....!

Tescos bodysuits are roomy. I have no problems in getting their trousers to fit my son. H&M fit well too over cloth too.

I found Mothercare, M&S & Next the worst - not enough room for cloth.

Baby Legs (legwarmers) are nice to use instead of trousers, particularly if you're using some of the cuter cloth nappies.

my LO was 5lb 5oz at birth so had real issues with size to start with - but as he has grown bigger (now a respectable 13lb 14oz at 5m ) there is less difference and all but a few of his clothes that fit over sposis also fit fine over his little bum genius cloth bum!

we did find ourselves moving up a size early. also found sleeveless a good option and v cheap in basic white.

Miyazaki · 17/06/2008 14:31

And I used the ones that don't have poppers (envelope neck vests) got them from john lewis v cheap, so no prob at all

popolini (also make cloth nappies) have some nice baby clothes but they are hard to find.

Lovage · 17/06/2008 20:04

My son is a beanpole, so we've never had trouble with clothes fitting over cloth nappies (and we use very bulky nappies). Yours might be thin too (hard to tell in advance I know, but you and partner's body shape should give you some clues)
