9 months and not babbling yet

Should I be worried?
He's just about to turn 9 months. He can crawl and wave. He responds to his name, smiles, laughs. Occasionally says 'ma', but only if he's a bit upset. Can say 'geee', blow raspberries, growl, squeaks and squeals. He shouts too. Just no babbling.
Would love to know if this is classed as okay? Thank you 😊

so much can change within a matter of months. He sounds like he is making some sounds and he is responding when you speak to him all of which is great. all babies are different and especially with their talking milestones xx enjoy your baby he sounds super

My reflection.

Children Dont develop in straight lines. On average they do. Individual children develop on more like staircase pattern. Very little change and then a leap.

In each area. Weight, height, gross motor skills, eating, fine motor etc.

They also tend to only do that leap in one thing at a time. So a relatively early crawler, may well be a later talker. Or vice versa.

From the parent of a <1yr walker, later to talk, who at 3.5 could talk non stop for a 2.5 hr drive.

@piccalili @ScaryM0nster thank you for your replies! And always nice to hear other experiences too.

I love what you said at the end haha @ScaryM0nster 💕😅

Just to reassure you - my daughter (now 20mo) never cooed or babbled. She did make a lot of other noises such as screeching like a baby dinosaur to get our attention! She also went through a growling phase like your child. By about 12 months she started 'babbling' in the traditional sense and she is now saying words. I remember worrying so much about her not babbling or cooing and I wish I'd not let comparison be the thief of joy, because her squeaks, growls, and dinosaur noises were very cute in retrospect.

SleafordSods · 27/12/2025 17:25

This is a very useful progress checker.

APatternGrammar · 27/12/2025 17:27

My second child never babbled, just started speaking in full sentences aged two.

LittlePositanoLemon · 27/12/2025 17:54

@SleafordSods thanks, I answered the questions and all but one he definitely does, but it says he needs support with social communication.

No, it’s fine. My eldest didn’t babble til about 11 months. HV said just to keep an eye on it and give her a ring if she didn’t start by end of 12 months. She was otherwise developmentally on track and is now a clever articulate teen.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 27/12/2025 18:12

Its fine. Dc1 didnt talk AT ALL til he was 2.5. Or make any speech like sounds at all.

Unfortunately, dc2 started talking early, so they both started at the same time!

Did they send you any links to some resources? If it says your LO needs some help you may be able to book an appointment with one of theor SaLTs to talk it through.

Saying that LO needs some support doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem though, as others have said, babies concentrate on different skills st different times.

Looking for opportunities to improve their social communication will help and if you’re concerned, you can always do the 9 month Ages & Stages.

Thanks everyone 💕
It's nice to hear about your little ones. It can be hard to compare when you know other babies that are doing things already. Hopefully he'll catch up with it as I want to hear his little voice chatting away lol 😊

I used the same progress checker when my son wasn't talking at 15 months, and had the same experience - he ticked every single box except saying words but it said he needed help with talking. I actually booked an advice line call and the person I spoke to was fairly reassuring but did describe it as a slight delay. It really worried me! But he's 18 months now and saying about 25 words, and all that came from 16 months plus. So as a previous poster said, it can happen in steps rather than gradually...one day they're not doing something, the next minute they are!

LittlePositanoLemon · 29/12/2025 18:52

@Starsnspikes thank you for sharing your experience, that's reassuring to know.
He's learning some different things at the moment and I wonder if he's concentrating more on his movement than speech. There seems to be new things he's been trying out quite a bit recently!

Update as I know people search for these threads a lot and it can be reassuring for some..the day before his 8 - 12 month review he started saying mamama 🥰
