DD(5) complaining of wedgies when wearing underwear.

My DD complains of wedgies and really dislikes wearing underwear. I have bought her 2 sizes bigger and she still feels she has wedgies. I have explained she does need to wear them for obvious reasons but I’d try to source some underwear that was not as uncomfortable. Can anyone recommend anything please? Has anyone ever tried their children in girls boxer shorts? Or is there any particular brand? I don’t mind paying the price if she’s comfortable. TIA

My DD also finds traditional pants uncomfortable so I’m with you! I buy boy short style from next or John Lewis they’re lovely and soft. Don’t buy too big as if they wrinkle under the leggings etc it’s very uncomfortable (bitter experience). I tend to go one year ahead eg age 10 for my 9 year old.

I go for the seamfree ones, mostly the short style ones.

My 7 year old DD is the same, but just doesn’t wear pants - hasn’t done since she was around 3. I’ve spent a fortune trying to find a pair she liked but was never successful.

Now she just wears soft dance shorts under skirts or just wears trousers, and it’s made life much easier for us by ending daily battles and let her be comfortable. It means she doesn’t wear jeans though.

We had this problem

Boden knickers were the answer, they’re proper knickers in my opinion.

same with the underpants, my son wears the Boden ones and hates any other ones

Yes, I second Boden knickers; they are very expensive, but absolutely worth it. I’d buy 2 sets & put them in my daughter’s stocking every year (always purchasing when on offer).

ThatWildMintSloth · 21/12/2025 07:58

My DD is the same. I buy her the girls boxers and she does find them more comfortable.
However, she just dislikes underwear in general and so she does whip them off soon as we are home.

H&M girl short style, good quality too.

Echo this. We have Frozen ones. The only wedgies are when tights are pulled up and after a rearrange all is well again for the day.

Buy from the boys' section. It's insane the difference in quality, it's a stiffer, thicker material with a firmer elastic. We use Sainsburys. We started because DD decided she wanted green pants and I could only find boys' ones but they are just much better made.
Edit to add - my dd is 5 as well.

Also, don't size up too much because there's more fabric to crumple up

MotherOfCrocodiles · 21/12/2025 08:10

Shorts style ones. Added bonus is it’s a bit more decent when they dangle upside down on the monkey bars in a dress.

BlackberryAppleCrumble · 21/12/2025 08:15

Another vote for Boden - they’re thick material with wide gussets.

Boy shorts didn’t work for us, she hated the feel of the leg bits rolling up.

My dd is nineteen and at university and still wears Boden knickers. All her other clothes are black with skulls on but her knickers are bunny.

IamChipmunk · 21/12/2025 08:17

my dd has shorts style girls pants from Next. They have loads of different designs/colours.

PlateyKatey · 21/12/2025 08:20

I have pants from sproutorganic on Etsy for this very reason. They are more like boy pants in that they are nice thick material. Expensive but they last for ages!
Girls and women’s pants are so often made in stupidly flimsy material.

LegoLandslide · 21/12/2025 08:20

The H&M lady boxers are great. They wear a lot better than the Next version - our Next set fell apart quite quickly.

@EnglishRaindd was devastated that the Frozen ones weren't available in her size!
