Carrying violin to school - tips?

Anyone found a good way for their young person to carry a heavy school bag and violin together on busy public transport. I think there is no easy way :-(

My daughter does heavy school bag and cello - they just make it work!

I did that for years. You just do it. Backpack leaves 2 hands free for violin. Or if they have a shoulder bag, you’ve still got 1 hand free for the violin, or you can get a backpack case for violin. If seated, violin stands up neatly between legs, bag on lap.

Did it for years too. Backpack or cross body bag, one hand free, one for the violin case. Never found an ‘easy’ way. Sometimes wished I’d taken up a woodwind instrument (while being glad I wasn’t learning the cello!)

I remember having to take my school bag, violin, PE bag and cookery basket to school on the bus one day each week for a while. Not easy.

You just carry it? In your hand? Violins aren't heavy

Or get a violin case with a shoulder strap. But bag is probably on the back so no spave for violin

Oh I was a cellist and was always jealous of the violins!

I regularly used to do Cello + school bag on the district line, from Y6 I think. I’m sure they’ll be fine.

Put a label with name and address and/or phone number inside the case in case it gets lost/left on bus or train. And some distinguishing feature such as a coloured ribbon or tag tied to the handle, so it can be easily identified.

Whizzywhisk · 20/12/2025 21:04

Left mine on the bus once 😬

I did it with a cello and PE kit bag!

I was like a mule but I just got on wit it.

My older DD cycles with hers vertical in a pannier. Her sister takes a cello on the bus. It helps to have a good case with shoulder straps, then you can put the instrument on your back and school bag in your arms / on your front. At least it’s not a harp.

I remember my mum advising the flute or clarinet - great advice!
but my friend did cello and her mum just used to drive her those days but not always easy.

Ive seen kids with those hold-alls on wheels - they’re quite a good idea or a case with a strap perhaps as people have suggested?
