Nap schedule for 5 month old?

We have a 5 month old son who I’m struggling to get to nap beyond 30 minutes (this has been the case since he was about 3.5 months)
To be honest it’s not a massive issue as his sleep is good at night and he seems to manage pretty well on the short naps however we don’t have anything in the way of a nap schedule / routine. I am always pretty busy and he loves being out and about so naps in the car, in his pram or in his cot if at home so it’s not like I have an issue getting him to nap or anything…..it just can feel a bit erratic at times and I never have any idea when the next nap might be! Even if we spend the whole day at home it doesn’t really make any difference so I sometimes find things easier out and about. On occassion he does a super long nap around 2 hours but I’ve no idea how to re create it the next day!
Most days i think “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” as I'm worried any changes may impact his night sleep, however I sometimes feel like I’d like a bit more routine, or at least an idea when he may do the longer nap. I also wonder if he needs a bit more structure / routine 🤷🏻‍♀️
Generally he’s a very content and smiley boy and is happy watching me potter around at home so it’s not like I NEED him to have long naps. Just a first time mum and wondering whether or not any of it really matters!

If he's happy and you're happy then, no, it doesn't matter when/where/how long he naps.

Some people do have a routine at this age because that works for them/their baby, but you don't need it.

This is what you need routine. Sleeping adjustments work well with a consistent routine. The only problem is once you change the routine, discomfort can happen.

My baby didn't naturally extend naps until 7 - 7.5 months. Nothing I did worked to get naps over 30 minutes before that point. Sometimes contact naps would be longer. It's not a problem unless your baby is unhappy (and mine was very very unhappy after dropping the third nap, screaming from 5pm every night...). If what your baby is currently doing works, I wouldn't worry until something changes.

Both of my babies were naturally short nappers and I couldn't get them to extend their naps until they did it naturally themselves around 10-11 months or so.

With the first I worried endlessly about it but I had no time to stress over it with my second baby and she's done just fine and now has 1 nap per day for around 1.5 hours.

If the baby is happy then you're doing great, just go with it!
