24 month old doesn’t talk in nursery school

My son has recently moved up to the 2-3 year old room at nursery and he’s finding the transition hard. His new key person had a chat with me today and said that he is a sweet boy but ‘very quiet’ and he’s much ‘chattier’ outside of nursery. I was surprised, as although he is quite shy, he talks non stop at home and can put together 4 or 5 word sentences now. Is this something I need to worry about yet?

My DS was like this at nursery. Chatty at home (and when he saw me at pick up) but almost silent during the day at nursery. He never grew out of it but was perfectly fine when he started school. I never really got to the bottom of it.

My daughter is 18m and she’s the same! Doesn’t stop talking at home but barely says anything at nursery, it makes me feel a bit sad but nursery said it’s really normal

Keep an eye on it op. My dc had selective mutism but no one believed me despite the fact they obviously saw he didn't talk at nursery.

I don't think you need to worry as such, but keep your eye out - I might try moving him, perhaps to a quieter environment like a childminder, if it doesn't sort itself out fairly soon, he might just be finding it overwhelming for whatever reason, though the chances are it will pass.

Ask him why he isn’t talking. I asked my then 3yo DC and he said "they not know me Mummy" and I explained that they did and all the nursery staff liked him very much and he was much chattier after that.
