Keeping a 3 and 1 year old entertained

I have a just turned 3 and just turned 1 year old. Most of the time I just bloody love it but now it's dark by 4 I'm finding it so hard to keep them entertained in the afternoon. They have such different needs and ideas of fun. I feel like I'm constantly getting it wrong and they end the day shouting and screaming.
The 3 year old is happy to play mainly by himself with a bit of help or input from me but my one year old just destroys and grabs whatever he is playing with. (Totally normal for age I know) It then results in chaos of both screaming or crying.
1 year old just wants to re arrange cupboards/open shut things/ take random objects for a tour of the house as walking is new to him but he needs constant supervision for this and then I feel like I'm neglecting my 3 year old.
I also only have a shower so putting them both in the bath isn't an option.
I'm using the TV far too much for my liking but it's the only way they don't annoy eachother.

Older child could set up his toys in a playpen..not sure if there is such thing any more as my kids are grown. I don't like them for toddlers as they need to be constantly moving but they are great for keeping toys which are set up free from roaming hands. Could little one sit in his high chair with some play dough while you make dinner. You might get a little peace. Or get a basin of water with a few toys..messy but fun.
Also if they are outside most of the day and get lots of fresh air and exercise l wouldn't feel guilty about a bit of TV especially if it is a bit educational..songs / rhymes etc.
Sit on the couch and read stories.
This stage will pass and sounds like you are doing fine.

We baby proofed our living room and his bedroom and put a gate on the living room (open plan so no door) and some safety things on door handles so he can't open doors. We even put foam mats everywhere and foam things on corners of the walls so even if he trips and falls it's not that bad.

So my 1 year old can run pretty wild in the living room and in his own room and he'll be totally fine.

We did this when he was 12 months and it was a total game changer. He'd been walking since 10 months so were going mad supervising him.

The baby Einstein curiosity table is excellent at occupying him, I'm sure there are other brands but this is the one we have.

And we also only have a shower at the moment but I bought a plastic bath. You really need one, it's the best thing in an evening. My 1 year old spends up to 30 minutes in the bath and always needs convincing to get out so you're missing out big time if you don't have a way to put them in water.
