2 week old baby in hospital. Nobody sure what’s wrong with him?

I appreciate that nobody here can give me a solid answer but I thought I’d make a post anyway as the doctors seem stumped here at the hospital.

My son was born at 40+4 and had to have oxygen and some help for about 30 minutes after delivery. There was talk of a NICU stay and all other scary stuff but it ended up fine and they let us take him with us to the recovery ward and go home after a couple of days.

We were home for about 9 days and during this time he’d been making strange squeaking / wheezing noises. Two days ago, I showed the midwife a video at a standard midwife appointment and they recommended A&E to be safe.

We were seen quickly and they reckon the noises are due to a floppy larynx (unfortunately typically untreatable and they eventually grow out of it) but incidentally they noticed that the baby’s oxygen kept dipping into the 80s.

They admitted us and we’ve been here for 2 nights now and they’re still not sure why it’s happening. He brings his levels back up into the 90s himself but they keep dropping.

He seems fine in himself otherwise. He doesn’t turn pale or have blue lips when it happens, he’s feeding fine, sleeping fine, temp is fine, pooping and peeing fine. Gaining weight. Doesn’t seem to struggle to breathe.

They’ve done a chest x-ray, NG tube to make sure no blockages in the airways, heart scan, blood co2 checks, listening to his chest lots. All normal. His heart rate is also always normal.

Any ideas what it could be?!?

They obviously don’t want to send us home while it’s still happening. They have him on a tiny amount of oxygen and every time they take him off, he seems fine for like 2 hours and then his levels start dipping again.

It’s horrible seeing my tiny baby on a bed with all these wires and oxygen and not being able to hold him properly 😭

That's just beyond stressful, I'm sorry OP, my heart goes out to you both. Bumping in case someone else sees the post.

I'm so sorry OP. I cannot help with suggestions, but know what it is like having your newborn all covered in wires so you cannot hold them properly (RSV in our case). Sending best wishes to you both.

I am not a doctor, but I thought that a floppy larynx could also cause breathing problems, especially when they’re on their back. Could the dropping oxygen be from that?
