Hi all, DD is 7 months old. I tried her with water in a sippy cup with a spout a week ago. She held it at first but naturally didn't understand you have to tilt it.

I think she then got frustated and upset and basically cried and cried if I tried again with her. Im nervous I'm doing it wrong with her and she wont learn how to use a cup properly.

Any tips would be great

Mine used to playing the bath with theirs....

They all get the hang of things eventually.

I went straight in with an open cup. I held it for him.

I'm sure they'll get the hang, it's all very new for them. But you can go straight to open cup, the nhs recommends it. I used shot glasses initially, just the right size.

Forgive me for the silly question, but I presume they'll just pour it all over themselves at first and you just let them do it, each time they get better?

No, you hold the cup for them.

Just give it to her in the bath for a few weeks and don’t make a big fuss out of it. She will get it. It’s just very new. It took mine til closer to 10 months to really get the hang of it. For milk, a straw cup works better when you get to the stage of milk as a drink.

TiredofLDN · 26/11/2025 11:03

Yeah try an open cup and hold it. Or maybe try one with a straw type mouthpiece if they are appropriate for the age. Possibly teething also.

She is young to master a cup does it havr a spout or teat?.id give it to her empty to let her batter it about then put a little bit of water in the bath as suggested, .but you have to teach her and give her a drink until she gets it,
