Do I give 12 month an iron supplement?

Most of the multivitamins don’t contain Iron, is there a reason?

I give my 12 month old the NHS Multimvitamin drops.
She’s not the best eater. Not sure how much iron she gets daily.
Do I need to supplement with Iron too?

I have ordered these
https://amzn.eu/d/1YWMFxa
They contain 71%NRV.

Should I not give her this or will it be okay?

Iron supplements cause a lot of stomach issues, cramps and constipation. I wouldn't give them unless advised to do so. Just work on your child's diet, that's the best thing for them.

At 12 months “not the best eater”

really what are you expecting ? They hardly need anything

if baby losing weight? If not then they don’t need anything extra

If you think she’s anaemic you need to see the doctor and get prescription supplements. If not, just include iron rich food with a source of vitamin C and avoid dairy for a couple of hours when you give it. It’s normal at that age not to be a great eater.

A 12 month old should be having 3 meals and 3 snacks a day.

They wouldn’t be very large meals, though, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they didn’t eat them all.

Meals and snacks are tiny things

of the baby isn’t losing weight , is alert and active , and no medical person has raised concerns they are fine

unless the doctor advises you to supplement - don’t
keep slowly introducing new foods
keep showing them the same food over and over again. Let them see you eat it. They get there

Does she eat any meat/ fish/ green leafy vegetables/ beans? I give DS an iron supplement as advised by a dietician because he's autistic and doesn't eat any of these foods apart from baked beans. But I didn't give them to my other children who ate more widely.

dairydebris · 22/11/2025 15:57

Has your child met spaghetti bolognese or steak yet?

I'd just focus on familiarising them with a variety of healthy foods, don't start relying on supplements or processed fortified crap.

Formula and / or breastmilk, and real, healthy whole foods.

if you boil some meat for a few hours and then give the water (stock) to the baby to drink that is a very easy way to get iron in them. i save the stock in giant ice cube trays and then pop out 1 whenever convenient.

Wellbaby do vitamin drops with iron in them

This is what we use for our similar aged baby but to be honest we arent super consistent around giving it, we often forget. We are vegetarian though and our baby also isn't a great eater - eats the least solid food of our three DC (and the the only one still breastfed at this age).

It wont do any harm to give them a supplement with it in but I also wouldn't unduly worry about it if you don't give one. Most babies this age don't eat much and if they do eat some meat then it's very easy to meet their iron requirements that way.

ZaHaK · 22/11/2025 19:22

If they don’t eat well, where do they get their iron from?
I will try Well baby

This is a good idea.

They can get enough from what they do eat, unless you are intentionally giving only food with very low iron. Excess iron is harmful too. I wouldn’t give supplements if a baby isn’t diagnosed anaemic. My son was because he was a premie and needed them, but he needed treatment on his teeth from the discoloration and it played havoc with his digestion.
