Please some advice on returning to work

I am due back at work next week after mat leave,
I put in a request for flexible working in may,
this has been followed with no communication from my work unless I chase to ask questions where in response I get don’t knows or nothing has been approved yet. I had a phone call off my manager today who said they can accommodate me for two weeks, I said and what will happen after the two weeks, she replied she didn’t know as she is waiting for replies from HR. It has been 6 months since I first made my manager aware i wanted flexible working and 5 months since I applied for them officially. The hours and days I have asked for already excist a lady who has just moved positions used to work them so technically they’re free to be taken up. I have no idea what to do now the stress is really affecting me I am having panic attacks. My union are fully backing me and I am in two minds to just not return as they are making it so difficult for me I want to go back to work but I feel as thought I am being pushed out. Any advice would be helpful please no sarcastic or nasty comments I am already in a vulnerable place atm.

I would bypass your manager and contact HR.

what did your union advise?

WannabeMathematician · 19/11/2025 17:33

If you’re union are backing you what do they say to do?

Have you tired ACAS?

What have your union said to do next? I think the obvious thing is that you need a definitive answer, in writing, from HR before your return.

I am going to do this Thankyou, my union rep told me not to do anything until I have it in writing but that doesn’t really help me as I’m due back Monday

they Said they are going to send an email to my employer and also for my to put in a grievance, which I am willing to do I understand this is going to break down relations between me and my employer but honestly at this point I am just angry.

They get two months to reply to a flexible working request and if they don't you can take them to a tribunal. Where they can be made to compensate you (up to 8 weeks pay) may be worth mentioning that to your employer to hurry them along! It's all on the gov.uk website.
