Best non plastic plates and bowls for toddler/infant children?

I'd like to replace all our IKEA plastic plates because they never dry properly in the dishwasher. So looking to get something not plastic, some type of ceramic I guess, as I think we're just about through the throwing stuff stage (children 3, 6 and 6).

We definitely need something small though, so bowls and plates similar size to the children's IKEA ones would be ideal. Happy for plain white or patterned.

Anyone have anything they would recommend please?

I should say that I would like them to be fairly cheap so we can get enough for three meals for three kids and potential guest children, and that I don't get too upset about accidental breaks.

Oh and needs to be dishwasher and microwave safe.

I just used normal ones, mine were Woolworths bought in closing down sale. Never broke any. Kids don’t need special stuff nor special meals for that matter

I bought some porcelain ones off amazon, they're amazing. They have a silicone sleeve that has a suction bottom. They go in the dishwasher, wash amazing. No issues with taste like you have with silicone or plastic or bamboo.
They were pricey. Think it was £50 for 3.

Just get basic cheap sets from
places like Tesco. Their plates aren't very big & they're very durable.

Yourethebeerthief · 17/11/2025 00:32

At that age why can’t they just use whatever plates you already have in the house?

I've just seen the ages, i assumed she was asking for babies and toddlers, as per her title. At those ages, i would definitely assume they're eating off normal plates!

My 3 year old uses bog standard Tesco dinner plates or the small plates. I'm sure 6 year olds could but if your 3 yo is a thrower then I'd just stick with the plastic

I'm looking for small "normal" bowls too, to replace those Ikea plastic ones. Mainly because we quite often heat things in them but I've read some scary things about heating in plastic. I know what you mean about them staying so wet in the dishwasher though. I also think my 3 year old is just about getting to the stage of being safe with our normal plates but our bowls are just massive compared to the plastic kiddy ones and both kids (even a much older one) use them for breakfast, bowls of snacks, bowls of yoghurt etc constantly so even just for fitting them all in the dishwasher at the end of the day (there's usually 6 or so to fit in at that point plus everything else, and it's a small dishwasher) I'm just trying to find small bowls!

Ikea has some called something like Oftast which are very cheap (50p or so a I recall) and come in smaller sizes, but they won't deliver them and I don't live near one. That might be an option for you. Every other place I've looked for cheap bowls either has big adult-sized bowls or teeny tiny condiment bowls and nothing in between. I just want a little stack of very cheap, smaller than average bowls and didn't think it would be this hard! I'm checking my 2 local charity shops every time I'm passing too, but no luck.

Oh thanks, I'll check them out next time in in IKEA.

It is annoyingly difficult!

I'm glad you get it, to PP above, no, a three year old doesn't need to use the same plates and bowls as an adult. My kids are a lot smaller than me, so it's much more comfortable for them to use smaller things.

Dunelm do small cereal bowls for about £2 each, and often have at least some that are animal designs, so child-friendly but not specifically for children. We have sheep, foxes, bees, and puffins. They do side plates in the same designs for about the same price, but we just use the side plates from our regular crockery.

I didn’t say they need to. I just don’t get making life difficult or making a problem out of nothing. I also don’t get buying more things when you have dishes at home already. Two of them are 6 and can absolutely eat off a normal dinner plate. The size of the plate doesn’t mean they need the same sized portion. And for the 3 year old, isn’t he using normal plates, cutlery and glasses etc at nursery anyway?

TheCraicDealer · 19/11/2025 00:51

I need to do this as well- I’m thinking of getting some enamel side plates for this very purpose!

Mosaic123 · 19/11/2025 02:06

Look at the American brand Corelle.

It's very lightweight and I've yet to break one. Or chip it.

Microwave, freezer, dishwasher and oven safe.

The plain white is nicest in my opinion but you might like some of the designs.

Amazon sells it as well as other retailers online
