Just that really.
She’s happy to play with socks and shoes, and will even press them against her foot to show she knows what they’re for. But if we try to put socks on her she will really object, then pull them off immediately. (Actually she’s just pulled my socks off me too!)

She's been walking for a few weeks now and we took her to get some soft first walkers; she had her feet properly measured etc. So I know the shoes fit her. But if we put them on her she gets EXTREMELY distressed. I’ve tried to push through it twice, take her out in the pram and distract her, but she is absolutely inconsolable, barely taking a breath, so both times I’ve given in after 5 minutes and removed the shoes.
But it’s getting too cold to be going out and walking around in bare feet!

I don’t think it’s a sensory issue.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any tips?

Well if she doesn't mind baby grows on her feet at least her feet will be warm when in her buggy, just have some cheap wellies to put on over the top if she wants to get out of it. She'll get the message, if outside has to wear something!
One of my now adult sons used to totally strip off the minute he was through the door, including nappy🤦‍♀️ even now in his 30s he prefers second hand clothes as says they are softer from all the washing so expect it was something sensory but they learn what is acceptable and what isn't if your consistent.

Could she wear footed babygrows with a jumper and coat, until she gets used to socks and shoes? And try putting very loose shoes or crocs over the top?

Yes I think this is the most likely solution. If I can get any style of loose shoe whatsoever on then I’ll take that as a win.

Completely forgot about these - try Playshoes Footies. Waterproof and very warm. No soles, so not suitable for walking, but they may be good to try as a transition - they are also relatively cheap, and available on Amazon.

Really does sound sensory to me. Check inside socks for any threads. Sometimes socks have logos on which lead to threads inside. Our daughter was like this and would say they were
“ frozened” ( socks)
If she doesn’t understand the pram/ walking shoes on, make some visuals or use photos.

@gentlemum @RandomMess i could definitely be wrong! The reasons I thought it wasn’t sensory are (i) no other issues that I thought could possibly be sensory related, (ii) doesn’t mind things like babygrows on her feet, (iii) doesn’t have any other issues with her feet being touched, in fact she actively encourages me to blow raspberries on her feet. Could it be a sensory issue despite those things? I’ll freely admit to knowing nothing on the topic and hope I haven’t offended anyone with my lack of knowledge.

Maybe it’s because the socks are a tighter fit on the feet than the babygrows are. It could still be a sensory issue just with her feet even though there’s no other sensory issues, or none that you’ve noticed yet.

DC2 was like this. They got diagnosed with ADHD and autism at age 20. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a sensory issue. DC2 also refused to wear gloves, even at 6 months old.

Oh yeah our youngest is like that, he started quite young and just hated socks, to avoid the argument we let him in the garden with no shoes on but he was totally fine with it (our eldest only went out once without shoes on)
Even at 3 our youngest still takes off his shoes the moment he comes in and usually claims his socks are wet and takes them off too...
I think you just have to be flexible when to "put your foot down" and when to just roll with it
