Is this wrong/harmful or just a different style?

I have a 10 month old baby. I have noticed that her nanny picks her up by her upper arms - so she will have one hand wrapped around each upper arm and pick her up that way. Baby’s arms are either by her side or a little raised (ie not in the air above her!). I always pick up baby by holding her torso beneath her armpits.

Are these just two different, normal ways to pick up a baby?

It just makes me wince slightly watching it as seems like a lot of weight for her arms/shoulders to take but I’m not sure if I’m just being pedantic…I don’t want to micromanage her if this is normal but obviously will request different method if it’s going to damage her shoulder joints!

I have also googled this but can’t actually find much online about best methods for older babies, just guidance for newborns.

I picked up my babies by torso under their armpits. I don't think I've ever seen anyone pick up a baby by their upper arms it does sound odd and not as secure

I think both are fine as long as baby is secure. At 10 months they can hold their head etc and will let you know if they're in pain or uncomfortable

If this is your actual nanny, whose salary you pay, and not nanny as in her grandma, this is your baby, tell her how to pick her up!

I remember someone told me not to pick them up by the arms, their shoulder sockets are not fully developed or something like that. And tbh, you pay the nanny, you tell her not to do this anymore. You are the mother, you get to be pedantic.

And I'm frankly quite shocked as my nanny is and always has been exceedingly gentle with my toddler.
