Hi.

Me and my partner are getting married in July, on the night of the wedding, my in laws are having the kids in their camper van. Im quite happy with this and was going to buy one of those small pop up travel cots, so she could sleep on top of the double bed, now my OH is refusing to spend £30 on it and has said, she can sleep outside in awning in a the big travel cot we already have. Im not happy with this, even though its July, the nights get quite cold. Am i being over protective or is it a bad idea??? Thanks

At 5 months is he proposing it is ok to leave a little baby outside whilst everyone else is inside? Have I misunderstood? Hope so!

You are right, even in July it is too cold to sleep outside. Apart from the cold, I wuld be a bit worried about the safety aspect, anyone could nip into the awning and your IL might not hear them.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/06/2008 14:05

Outside on its own or with adults? Or its own, then yes, but with adults it will be fine.

I took DS camping with me from this age, he was wrapped up warm and wore a hat and survived fune! He was right next to me in the tent th e whole time though.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/06/2008 14:06

How abou toyu look in your local classified or ebay or freecycle for a cheap/free second hand travel cot you can use?

Kindersurprise · 07/06/2008 14:13

Loads on ebay

lisad123 · 07/06/2008 14:28

Nettos had them in last week for £14

SparklyGothKat · 07/06/2008 16:21

I took DD1 camping once when she was 12 months old, it was june and really hot during the day, but at night the temp dropped so much that when I checked on her in the night, she was freezing, i thought she was dead! she was that cold!! I took her into our bed each night after that. I would spend the £30.....

Way too young to sleep outside. Get the poor child a decent bed.

Twiglett · 07/06/2008 16:34

men can be idiots!

findtheriver · 07/06/2008 17:56

If the baby is alone then NO IT IS NOT OK!!!!!!!!!
But I agree with Overmydead.. that normal camping conditions as long as the weather is seasonal are fine at this age. We took our dcs camping from around this age. Definitely keep a hat on all night, and plenty of warm clothes, sleeping bag and covers. No probs!!

hercules1 · 07/06/2008 18:00

I sleep next to dd cuddled up with huge duvet, blankets, socks etc. Never, ever would I do as he suggests.

VaginaShmergina · 07/06/2008 18:10

WTF! No way, stick to your guns What a twatt! What is £30 if it means your baby is safe?

minouminou · 07/06/2008 20:44

errrrrrrrr - is he having a laugh?
he can stay up all night with her, then.
knobwad.

SmallShips · 07/06/2008 22:01

Thanks guys, sorry it's taken so long to reply, have been enjoying the sun. He wants to leave her in the awning with her 10 year old cousin! It's not happening! Just needed him to read this, as i dont think he thought it through!

OP posts:
RGPargy · 07/06/2008 22:04

that he would even suggest it!! Stick to your guns and get that travel cot thing!! NO WAY IN HELL would i let my baby sleep outside in an awning while i'm snuggled up in bed!!!

littleboyblue · 07/06/2008 22:05

The way I'd look at it is, would I like to sleep outside even if warm? Unless I'm rotten drunk, the answer is no, so I would insist that baby goes inside.
Especially at a party, if I wanna have a good time I need lo to be as settled as poss and reduce the disturbance factors IYKWIM

Alfreda · 07/06/2008 22:06

Perhaps you could sigh and say that you will be having to sleep with your baby on his wedding night then, and see how he likes them apples.

Guadalupe · 07/06/2008 22:09

he's being a complete idiot

awnings are not even as sealed and cosy as tents and they're cold enough. We used to camp lots when they were babies and even when we had a caravan I would bring them in with us some nights as it got so cold.

Tell him he can sleep in the awning and see if he likes it.

SmallShips · 07/06/2008 22:11

lol Alfreda, good plan . He has read all the replies and has started back tracking, "oh i told you she would actually be sleeping inside" when he actually made a big point of trying to make me look like i'm overreacting in front of his parents... grrr men!!

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/06/2008 22:24

Er, scuse me but what about the 10 year old sleeping on her own outside in just an unsecure awning?
