He’s a little dynamo. Zooming everywhere, climbing (really bloody climbing) everything. Lately though, it’s getting him dressed and changing his nappy that’s an absolute nightmare. He twists, resists, tries to escape when I dress him in the morning, and does the same plus big tears at night. He’s not overtired. He has his routine. He just doesn’t want to do it! He has eczema so also needs to be slathered with emollient, which makes it ten times harder (slippery and messy)! I try to do it efficiently, calmly, and assertively, give him distractions etc, but he’s so strong and honestly it’s exhausting me. I dread it!

Does anyone have any tips to help make this easier? 🙏 I have yet to find a way to pin him that he can’t get out of without me potentially injuring him / that doesn’t get poo or emollient everywhere! 🫣😩

I had a very active second baby (walked at 8.5 months and climbed everything) I think I just started getting her ready while she was standing rather than trying to lie her down. I also used pull-ups from early on too. I think avoiding clothing with poppers helped me speed up my dressing too.

Thanks @Morecoffeethanks, will try to avoid the poppers for now. He’s my second too and it’s a shock! DD went through a phase of it but not this bad! We do pull ups with him standing and that does help but he’s always try to bounce or drop to his knees to escape. I despair!

Long sleeved t-shirts and joggers or stretchy ribbed leggings - simple as possible for on and off! Two piece pyjamas for night time, or sleep suits with zips only, if you must have sleep suits, but personally I found one leg would escape whilst I was getting the other in.

How many times a day do you need to do the emollient? At particularly tricky times we've done it twice as often, but only half the body each time. Tries their patience less, and only half of them is slippery!

Exactly the same as mine, cruising at 8 months so pull ups and just doing it all standing up. Mines 3 now and still does it😬 it's amazing how bloody strong they are isn't it😅

Nappies: sit on the floor and put one of your legs flat over their chest, so they’re pinned under your knee and your hands are free for the change.

Morecoffeethanks · 07/11/2025 20:27

@Devilsmommy @SnugSheep these second babies are something else aren’t they?! Mines 2 now and still super active. But she is starting to be able to dress herself when the mood takes her and when it doesn’t she is old enough to bribe haha!

Mines actually my first and definitely my only. I don't think I'd cope if I had a second one the same 😅

Does he get distracted if you put a favourite toy or book in his hands while changing him? That's how i managed (plus the occasional baby sensory video on my phone if I was super desperate... I know, I know).

Fizhy · 07/11/2025 21:49

Ahh yes my second was (still is at 21 months) like this! He's WILD. I thought my DD was but he's been her apprentice and I know about it 😂. He will not be distracted, he just gives me a look which says 'nice try'. No other advice than what's been suggested - pull ups, let them stand up and just chase them around trying to wrangle them in clothes. I tend to just go leggings and jumper because I can pull them on easy. No poppers. Lots of solidarity. My current battle is the car seat. Every. Single. Time.

Tiebiter · 07/11/2025 21:51

My ds was exactly the same (try cutting egg it solved the eczema for us). We basically just had to live in the woods and be wild whenever I wasn't at work.

This. Had to do it for both my DSs.

BoyMummummum · 07/11/2025 22:06

Yeah my DS was the same. He was climing and cruising by 9 months, walking by 10 months. I was going nuts while all the other mums were still enjoying their little potatoes who were barely crawling.

He was a delightful toddler though so that made up for it.

He sounds like an ambitious one, bless him! One tip i'd reccommend with his eczema is to stop the emollients to begin with. You probably might've noticed that the emollient is relieving his eczema temporarily but not making much difference. I had the same thing with my sister. We were recommended to stop all paraffin creams, and only to use steroids if skin was broken but even then in really small small doses. Switch to Sanex 0% bodywash and try the Rejuvaskin repair cream! Worked like a miracle. Hope this helps!

Also re eczema, this was a symptom of CMPA for my son. Once I removed all dairy and soy from my diet (he is breasfed), all symptoms disappeared. Reflux, eczema, all gone.
